Sweeping scales?

100thmonk	Date: May 8, 2004 @ 4:14 PM anyone out there use the sweeping scales from classical guitar on their electric bass, instead of the standard 4-fret techniques?
sqrlcub	Date: May 9, 2004 @ 7:43 PM I do. I play classical guitar but when I go back to bass I use a mix of classical guitar technique and upright bass technique when writing out melodies and basslines.

100thmonk	Date: May 10, 2004 @ 1:48 AM well, yes and no. if you use a pick then you can fully utilize the classical guitar modes in the same way. but if you use your fingers then it's more about using a five fret reach to allow one to play up to four scale tones beyond one octave without changing positions. it.s a little hard at first playing this way. particularly at the first fret, but with practice(never straining it.) it became quite natural. i actually use a 3/4 scale neck on my electric, which really allows for this style of playing. yeah, so do ya use em? it really opens up the possibilities!

bbranch	Date: July 28, 2004 @ 12:24 AM I have started useing the 5-fret, 3 notes per string method of scales for about a year now. It is really helpful. I can play a 2 octave scale in one position on a 5-string. I took a private lesson with Adam Nitti (head of the bass dept. at AIM) last summer and he said to pivot the left hand instead of stretching b/c of risk of carpel tunnel syndrome. It can be a risky approach to fingering if you are not careful.
100thmonk	Date: October 14, 2004 @ 4:24 PM actually that is an important note, especially when playing near the nut. also don't overdo it. try it practice it, if you have a guitar around learn them on the guitar then work your fingers up to it. it won't necessarily come over night.
