OK... some clarification needed here...
By "key sound", do you mean a key sound which
stands out above your beats, or keys as in
musical notes?

No problem. Try unsing something which shouldn't
be a drum in the first place. Think of "Insane in
the membrane" by cypres hill, how they have that
weird horse neigh at the end of every bar.
Alternatively, try industrial clunk sounds...
Play around with the volume of your drum samples.
Try making the key sound much louder. If you can
play the same sound in two tracks, offsetting the
timing by a couple of millisecconds. This creates
a nice 3d effect. Also, you can employ a
compressor, which basically will try and keep the
track's volume constant... i.e. when you trigger
a LOUD sound, everything else will momentarily
soften. This can create a nice "Breathing" effect
if that is what you want. Avoid over-usage of
compressors or limeters if you want a "punchy"
beat. Polyrithms (out-of-sync rythms which get
back into sync every few bars, or even within a
bar) and simplicity are sometimes hard to get
right, because you always have to restrain
yourself. But can be rewarding, because the beat
never seems to drown under itself and there is
more space for the key sound to stand out. It can
also help to play your key sound only once every
2 or 4 bars. (p.s. a bar is one 4 count section,
if you are using a 4/4 time scheme that is, or a
3 count section for 3/4...)
Anyway, at the end of the day it doesn't matter
what anyone says, just mess around and have fun.
Do what sounds right to you.
