If you want to download some hacked VST's to test
out prior to purchase head over to supernova.org
and scroll throught he Windows Apps section. You
will need to download a bittorrant client like
azureus to download files from this site which
may require a bit of configuration with your
router (if you have one) but it is well worth it.
Of could you should purchase the VSTs once you
find what you like.
I recommend Native Instruments B4, Pro-53, Waves
Bundle, Battery, Reason, Novation V-Station,
Steinberg Warp VST (nice for grungy bass sounds),
FL Studio standalone VSTs just to name a few.
I originally purchased Sonar 1, but eventually
converted over to Cubase SX 2.0 and FL Studio. I
found both programs to be more compatible with my
needs.
www.flstudio.com has a number of very useable
VSTs you can get on the cheap which are also
built into their main program. The flstudio VSTs
are extremely well coded so as to lower CPU
usage. FL Studio is also an awesome standalone
application which can be purchased for around
$100-$150. Best of all you can run the standalone
app as a VST in Sonar or Cubase SX. It will
provide a ton of sounds and effects. I like to
use FL Studio this way with Cubase SX.
If you want to hear some of these VSTs in action
check out these these tracks :

Aside from built in FL Studio sounds I utilized
Novations V-Station, Native Instruments B4,
Pro-53, FL Studio Sytrus synth, and a number of
samples off of www.samplefusion.com.

I use Sonar 3 PE, as well.
I am a big fan of Native Instruments. B4 is
indistinguishable from a real B3 - it's crazy!
Also, their Guitar Rig is a VST *and* and
standalone, and it allows a whole rack of FX in
one. Elektrik Piano is just beautiful - the
Rhodes samples are second to none. Make sure you
have at LEAST a gig of RAM, however.
