TameasDust	Date: February 3, 2009 @ 2:30 PM Snow Britain: Another 10 inches of snow to hit by Thursday Snow Britain More deep snow is forecast to blanket the country on Thursday, prompting fears that the country could be brought to a second standstill. The Met Office has issued a severe weather advisory, warning that as much as 25 centimetres (10 inches) of snow could build up in some areas. The latest covering is expected as a warm front of air from France clashes over Britain with cold air coming in from the North. The forecast brings with it renewed concern for the state of the country's roads and railways, which shut down on Monday as the most snow in 20 years fell, costing already struggling businesses millions of pounds in lost hours as more than six million people stayed at home. Western parts of Britain were worst hit today, with about two inches of snow falling in Cornwall and Wales. There were predictions of thunder and hail storms to come as well as more snow in the West Midlands and a fresh dusting in parts of Surrey and Berkshire. As the first covering begins to thaw in many places but temperatures remain around zero, there are now concerns about black ice on the roads. The Highways Agency has repeated its plea to motorists to postpone all but essential journeys as triple the number of accidents were reported along with 3,000 breakdowns. Norwich Union insurance said that it had received more than 4,000 claims on Monday alone, 45 per cent higher even than its own predictions. With gritters and grit already in short supply, drivers were told to leave up to 10 times as much space between themselves and other vehicles as they would normally do. A spokesman for the RAC said: "If you are driving along and you cannot hear your wheels turning that probably means you are on ice." Several Welsh mountain roads were closed after a string of accidents. In Oxfordshire a 59-year-old lorry driver was killed after his vehicle skidded on the A420, colliding with a BMW before crashing into a central reservation. In Portsmouth a van driver escaped unhurt despite skidding on a patch of ice, sliding across a road and smashing into the living room of a ground floor flat. "I knew I wasn't going to stop in time so I held my hands up to my face and braced myself for what was going to happen," said the driver, Sam Armstrong, 23. "I'm glad no one was in and no one was hurt – it could have been a lot worse." Barry Gromett, forecaster at the Met Office, said the snow which has progressed from London and the South East to the North and South West on Tuesday will return to Wales and central and southern England on Wednesday night and into Thursday. "We're certainly not out of the woods yet," he said. "It's an interesting situation developing for later in the week. There will be warm, moist air coming up from the south which will meet with a cold front coming down from the north. "It looks like the cold air will win the battle and it's a recipe for some more snow. "At this point, it looks like the most affected areas will be Wales, extending through the Midlands and over towards Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and East Anglia but it's likely to feed southwards during the course of Wednesday night and Thursday, with the potential for similar amounts to those we've already seen

I'm on the east coast, directly in the path of the first wave of snow - It barely settled here before it turned to rain and freezing winds.

From all the way down the page-- Atmospheric diffusion usually plays a part in this one. There is less landmass in the SH and more ocean (plus the Southern icecap). More sunlight is thus reflected. The heat absorbed by land is diffused more easily in this manner, as hot air is likely to rise to cooler air over the oceans. The reality is more complicated than this, but this is where I sign off.
