Pearl Soundcheck?

First of all, let me introduce myself. I'm Tim,
another bassist turned drummer. While I'm looking
to begin playing drums, my primary focus is still
on electric and double bass, just tossing drums
in for that added advantage being the "other
part" of the rhythm section.
I'm looking to spend around $500 on a complete 5
piece set, with hardware and cymbals. New or used
doesn't matter as long as they sound good and
don't look like trash.
My primary influences are Guns N' Roses,
Metallica, Megadeth, Velvet Revolver, Stone
Temple Pilots and Godsmack. Just a little idea of
the setup I'm looking for.
I'm looking at the Pearl Soundcheck set, for $450
new with all the hardware, 22x16 kick, 12x10 and
13x11 rack toms, 16x16 floor tom and a 14x5.5
wood snare. Probably gonna toss on some cheapy
cymbals I'm gonna buy off of a friend. Are these
any good?
What would you recommend? I'm not going to be
very serious, but I'd like it to be good enough
to jam in my basement with other people, and
acceptable for other drummers (I'm gonna end up
playing mostly bass when we jam).
Any recommendations / advice?

You can't really go wrong with a pearl kit...
it's sorta like having a fender guitar. If tuned
right, you can get away with playing live with it
.... cymbals on the other hand... it's good to
buy some half decent ones, maybe one at a time.
Hope this helps

I've been playing Pearl for 27 years... I have an
all maple set now, but My 6 year old son has my
original 5 piece from 1977. It was cheap wood,
but with good heads, good tuning, they still kick
ass. As for Cymbals, I agree with Pog, get some
decent ones. Try the local pawn shop or somewhere
that sells used cymbals, they only get better
with age. Make sure you check for hairline cracks
along the ridges from the lathe, sometimes they
are hard to see. Trust your ears.

Yeah - as for second hand cymbals - old Paistes
are pretty cheap second hand, and still sound
great - as do Super Zyn cymbals...
