Building your own drumset... worth it?

Hello drum forum. I've been drumming for about 3
years now, and I also do some electronic music on
here. My kit is just a Ludwig Accent 5-piece and
I want to upgrade to Maple. Now, maple kits are
very expensive, in like the 1,000 dollar and up
range. If I were to buy the shells, hardware, and
wrap do you think that'd be better than just
buying one or not?
Because if I do that, it's only going to cost me
about 500 dollars instead of a grand or more.
Give me some feedback.

"do you think that'd be better than just buying
one or not?" ......only you can answer that. If
the end result is what you want then sure go for
it. Guitar players can easily go out and buy a
body, neck, pre-wired electronics, bridge and
tuners...bring it all home with a set of strings
and be quite happy with the results. I suppose
drummers could do the same......keep us posted.

not knowing about actual cost, maybe. But I'm
willing to bet it would as much, or more and you
have to do the work....... Could be fun, could be
a major pain in the ass...... Keep us
informed…..

hey.. ya, i just recently built my own maple
keller keller drum kit. there are various drum
sites where you can buy the shells andd hardware
for cheap and do the staining and finishing by
yourself. I bought my snare shell off of ebay for
120$ and its a 12" x 7" 40 ply and i offset my
own lugs, which is pretty sweet. Another thing
about making your own drums is that you can
choose all of your own sizes.. which is really
awesome, i have a 22" x 22" bass drum that i am
inlove with. here are some pics.

i did all of my finishing myself with a few coats
of polyuerothain for each drum and a different
finish on the snare drum. making your own drums
is fun but is also a hell of a lot of work, you
haver to be patient. i hope i helped out.
