We used Radar 32, Pro Tools Digi001, Digi002, and TDM system, cubase, and even a motu. The mixer we used was a neeve (Argh). And a shit load of tubed compressors. Any questions?

Apertome	Date: May 2, 2004 @ 9:26 PM I kind of agree with everyone's comments. Using expensive gear does not make for good production. This does sound pretty good, it's got a clear sound, but you did compress the hell out of it. I understand what you guys are shooting for, that highly-polished radio-ready sound, and you captured that fairly well. But IMO that kind of sound is simply soulless. I think the song is decent, but you squeezed every last bit of character out of it with those compressors.

But I did feel what your saying on a couple of songs, that roof was lowered a bit, took away from the energy . I am the singer, I got really angry throughout this project about creative differences with the producer. I wanted more hard rock kick you the nuts singing, he made me tone it down, because of industry standard. In the end we met somewhere in middle leaning to his side. But we did the entire album in only 2.5 months, so it came out fairly good. Thanks for the input though. T-rakcs is a fine piece of software, but I would not expect a pro mastering enginner to use low end software for mastering G

DevonPowell	Date: May 3, 2004 @ 10:57 AM Timeouts for all 3 of you Good criticism is that which is not tainted by emotion... I personally think it's damn cool that you can afford to use the Protools digi setups, and other equipment, and it sounds very tight. Wish I could hook up with that! That said, I guess I can see how some might feel a little bristly by the notion that the first thing you put up front was the equipment you used and not necessarily the music (kind of like you were bragging, maybe?). I didn't/don't have a problem with it, tho. I liked the song on the whole, very well done. I can see what you meant about the vocals being sort of constrained, but I think you come thru very well regardless. I'm using Plantronics DSP-500's and I didn't notice it being overly compressed. I have them cranked tho, and the eq is set to rock, so that could be filling up the sound alot. The snare and hi-hat does seem to be a little higher up than everything else in the mix upon 2nd listen, but I don't think it detracts from the song beyond it being a little more noticeable. Good stuff there, keep shining!

(I guess as well I was asking for GMONK to be a dick to me) I love you Gmonk. No hard feelings alright? Really honestly got lucky with the gear cause I was friends with the producer. DevonPowell	Date: May 3, 2004 @ 12:21 PM That song (make things right) is very tight in the recording. The intro reminded me of some other song, and didn't set this one apart which I was somewhat stuck on for some reason. Maybe it was just those 4 chords... I think the song is good stuff, and deserves a more befitting intro to make it stand out. Chew on that for a bit, eh? Like the vocals on this one, come across as a bit more gritty and full-bodies than the other song I heard. Lyrics are angst driven, contain good power and energy. Again, I'm hearing that snare a bit too much in the mix? Hi-hat sounds ok this time, tho. Are there going to be any backing vocals for this? I can hear some really nice harmonies coming on all over the place that would really benefit the tune as a whole IMO. You're voice is great for a frontman, but there's something to having some strong backing singers/vocals, even done up yourself (did I hear some in there? I thought I might have, but there was only 1 spot and they were far too deep in the mix to make it out 4 sure). I don't think instrumentally other than that snare that I can hear anything, and don't want to hear anything else in it so that's good. Those vocals (backing) are what I think I'm pining for in this...

BTW, I think it's misleading to say you recorded your album all by yourselves, then go on and on about the producer. If you had a producer, I don't consider that doing it on your own, even if you did foot the bill. Unless, say, the producer was a member of the group. This doesn't change any of my above comments, but I am definitely less impressed now.

ryanwilliams	Date: May 3, 2004 @ 3:32 PM Well, IMO, it's a good song. But I don't necessarily see what difference the quality of the recording is. At this site alone I've heard a LOT of great, GREAT songs that were recorded poorly, and I really wouldn't put my own recordings terribly far ahead of them. I think the majority of music fans aren't really going to care about what you recorded your songs on, so I agree with what Devon said (..bristly..) and also with mux's last comment. A good song transcends the method by which it's made available to people.

This was his 1st complete project ever, so its not really misleading saying we did it ourselves. I did give him most of the control over direction, but given the timing we just had to track, and role with it. WE had a dealine becuase of Shows booked in South America. Thats why the album name is Let It Ride... Ryan, your right people out there don't really know or care enough about how it was done, but I put the gear down here because it was the gear page.

noimportante	Date: May 3, 2004 @ 5:12 PM I think that the deal was My producer worked under the head producer of the studio. They are always bitchin back an forth about whats better cubase or pro tools, radr vs hard disk, etc etc. Anyway, I think what it came down to was time. We had a 2.5 month deadline for the project, so we used radar for tracking drums (uses no DSP) dumped down to protools for guitars and bass and vox, then to cubase for editing. A couple of the songs on the CD were done on mac, the others on PC.

I really did have some ideas ready, but we just couldnt do it. every extra day cost us 250 bucks rush fees, so we has to just send it off. But believe me, I feel what your saying... thedarkaeons	Date: May 3, 2004 @ 8:21 PM Btw, we recorded everything ourselves on our computers using Cakewalk Plasma, Cool Edit 2000 and mastered with T-Racks. I have a 1.3 Duron I built myself and a Echo Darla (the old 20 bit version). The guitar was a Epiphany Les Paul recorded through a mic'd (Shure SM57) 1x12 open back cab we built and an old ass Peavy head. The bass was a Aria Pro II 5 string recorded through a mic'd Peavy TKO 75 combo. The vocals were all recorded with a Shure SM58 and dbx Project 1 compressor. Crappy old Yamaha MC1202 mixer. Me and my bro produced it ourselves so we didn't have anyone to argue with - well, except each other. We are proud of the fact that we did it all ourselves for basically nothing (just the equipment we've assembled over the last 10 years or so) and it sounds very professional.
noimportante	Date: May 4, 2004 @ 3:18 AM We actualy started this project in South America. I had some gear I brought with me down to Bogota. It got lost on the way in Miami, but I got the gear a couple days later. We had a MAc g4, digi001, set of sienhiesers, couple 57s & 58s, and 2 groove tubes for dynamics. I had to head back to the states so I sold my gear to the Colombians I was working with so they could start a studio down there. The band in Colombia worked on the shit for like 8 months, then I needed the files to finnish the cd in the states. 3 failed packages (Thanks to US customs) later we recive the files in the States. Unfortuanly the quality of the old music compared to the new didn't match up (mics, pres, & tubes). The producer scratched 7 songs of the top and decided to rerecord everything. By this time we only had 2.5 months to dealine. So hence the name of the album "let It Ride.." Now I run a digi002 rack and a couple DBX pres. running Amd 2700 2 gb ram. Still doesnt compare to the mac, anyone have a powerbook they want to get rid of?
noimportante	Date: May 4, 2004 @ 3:22 AM what kind of bit rates can you run with cool edit? remember sometimes old crappy mixers can actually add to the warmth. I have an old Sun 16 ch mixer, looks like shit sounds great on the channels that work. I should throw it away or sell it, right now its n an avil case and I use it as a coffe table.
