Newbie Mixer Question

Having never used a mixer before, I used the one
we have at work (we sell them) while nobody was
there.
I was surprised to find that although I adjusted
the mic and music levels to what I thought was
right, as soon as I put any volume into the
singing, the music level dropped, coming back up
when the vocals quitened.
I believe that this may be some sort of
compression, but the effects on the mixer (which
aren't much good anyway) were all off.
For a newbie, can someone tell me whether this is
normal in a mixer or if this just means that the
one we sell is not good.
Many Thanks
Chris

Hmm... It could be some effects the mixer is
routed to of the mixer or something on the mixer.
It could certainly be a compressor. There is
another thing I could think of. It could be a
phase issue.
If you have two signals which are opposite phase
playing at the same time they will cancel
eachother out. However this would happen all the
time rather then when you put extra volume into
your voice hmm...

Sorry I meant off the mixer it would have wires
going out of the mixer to something else an
external compressor that could be it.
