good, solid expression pedal?

zedsalt	Date: June 26, 2007 @ 10:54 AM I love my Moogerfooger MF101! It's by far the most versatile stompbox I have and built like a freakin' TANK. One of the things that attracted me to it was the idea that one could plug in expression pedals to change all but one of the parameters. I ordered one expression pedal when I bought the MF101, and SO unlike the base unit, the expression pedal is a cheesy little piece of poorly-made CRAP! I have to clean it every single time I use it, sometimes having to stop and clean it in the middle of a rush of inspiration, and it's so wimpy, it bends when I step on it! It's just a stereo cable with a quarter inch male end and a pot (250K, I think). Does anyone know where I might find a well-built pedal to replace it with? Even one with a different pot and/or a different cable set up would be alright...
Mojosnake	Date: June 26, 2007 @ 11:11 AM i might be wrong but most volume pedals double as an expression pedal i would take the moogerfooger to a music store and try a volume pedal out i might be way off base though , i use digitech multi-effects pedals and they say to use a volume pedal as an expression pedal for things like the whammmy,wha wha,and various other effects so this is what i'm basing this off of, anyway i hope this helped
zedsalt	Date: June 27, 2007 @ 10:55 AM I have a Dunlop Tremolo/Volume pedal that is exactly the kind of hardwired metal and rubber monster that I hope to use, but I'm not sure how to hook it up. The Moogerfooger uses a stereo jack; should the tip be the input of the volume pedal or the sleeve? Where should I set the range on the volume pedal? Could I do any damage to either unit by experimenting?
kingo	Date: June 27, 2007 @ 10:18 PM Sounds like you can't do that directly -- "Or, if you do not plan to use any expression pedals with your MF-101 but would like to apply control voltages to one or more pedal control inputs, you can use patch cords with regular two-conductor (tip-sleeve) phone plugs. These will short out the +5.7 volt supply to the ring contacts. This voltage is current-limited, so you won't burn anything out, - but no pedal will work in any of the pedal control jacks if a tip-sleeve plug is plugged into even one of the pedal jacks." http://www.moogmusic.com/manuals/mf-101.pdf You should be able to find some info on how to re-wire your volume pedal with tip-ring-sleeve instead of just the tip-ring that it has now, as the manual there also says that the ring portion is not supposed to connect to anything. So basically you'd rewire your pedal with a TRS plug with the current tip to the TRS tip, the current sleeve to the TRS sleeve, and nothing connected to the ring. I think. Of course I don't have one to play with to try, so if you have some extras laying around you can send 'em to me and I'll try it for you.

zedsalt	Date: June 28, 2007 @ 11:32 AM You guys are great, but I think I'm going to ask the folks who sold me the cheap piece of crap expression pedal that I purchased along with the unit. One thing that concerns me is that my volume pedal is active, while the expression pedal is nothing but a stereo wire attached to a pot, with a gear system to turn the knob when one works the pedal. There's literally nothing else in there, a situation which apparently results in a near-vacuum that nature seeks to fill with every bit of dust, cobweb, hair, etc. within a three mile radius.
kingo	Date: June 28, 2007 @ 11:41 AM I think all expression pedal type things are going to be some kind of pot moved mechanically. Though I don't know if most of them are actually a rotating pot or not. At any rate, it sounds like that's really what you need is a two connection pot (which is basically a three connection pot with two of the connections wired together.) All of that technical jargon is brought to you by I-only-sort-of-know-what-I'm-talking-about, by the way. But yeah, a better manufactured one would probably be great.

The potentiometer wiper is connected to the tip terminal. The pedal cable should be shielded, with the shield connected to the sleeve." Maybe what I should do is find a Dunlop Wah of some sort (a junked one would be perfect!), gut it, put in a different pot (I think they usually use 250Ks), plug the left hole, and run a stereo cable out the right side. It still ticks me off to no end that the Moog expression pedal is such a piece of crap...
zedsalt	Date: July 4, 2007 @ 10:50 AM Update: I read on some keyboard repair site that a Dunlop High Gain is completely passive, just the pot and the mechanism to turn it. Does anyone here own one, and if so, could you tell me if that site was correct?
zedsalt	Date: July 15, 2007 @ 10:22 AM The forums at moogmusic are NO where NEAR as active as the ones here; I've yet to get any kind of help there. I frankenstined a cable last p.m., but I must not have wired it incorrectly. What little info I have to work with contradicts itself. Now, I'm leaning toward just replacing the pot in the flimsy EP1 case with something properly sealed.

zedsalt	Date: July 23, 2007 @ 10:35 AM I took the pot/wire assembly to Radio Shack last night...after all, I have managed to not break the pedal for eight or nine years now...but no luck. The original has a plastic shaft with a teensy tiny cotter (sp?) pin in it, and the pedal only has room for about an inch and a quarter of shaft. I'd have to cut off the end of the metal shaft and (here's the tricky bit) drill a hole through it sideways. I guess what I'm going to do now is clean the original pot as best as I can, put a piece of tape over the (here's the ironic bit) cleaning access hole, say a little prayer, and put it all back together.
