new amp.

philiphmusic	Date: May 11, 2008 @ 11:40 AM the amp i've got right now is a cheap little thing, while i've got a schecter c-1 for my guitar. i'd like to get a better amp to get a better sound. i mainly play rock, and just in my basement and maybe a few small gigs; i dont't need like a 3,247,892 watt amp. any suggestions?
GeneHilbert	Date: May 11, 2008 @ 5:09 PM The little solid state Marshall is kewl. I have an 80 watt into 1 12" combo. Plus you can add another cab if you want - but I have used this amp as is and it kicks ass. The only thing that is weak - is that the reverb is a little under powered and no depth. Marshall isn't known for effects, they are known for tone and power...... I have a ton of pedals so I don't miss the amp effect. Peavey & Crate both make nice little amps. Solid state amps are essentially trouble free. No tubes to replace or bias to adjust. You show up - they show up. An antidote about Peavey……. I was performing in a production of “Grease”. In the middle of the show, someone spilled a can of soda into the top of my Peavey Musician head. Well, the amp starts SCREAMING LOUD. All I can do is turn the amp off. Fortunately I could play thought the house system for the rest of the show that night. That was Saturday night – the next show was Wednesday. I took the amp home that night and poured 2 bottles of isopropyl alcohol into it. I shook it up good, coating the insides over and over to flush it out. Then I let it dry out good. By Monday the amp was working fine….. That happened in 1987 – I still use it to this day……..

That happened in 1987 – I still use it to this day…….. i bet that wouldent happen with a new peavey i just bet they arent built like they were back then i could be wrong ...the satch man plays um ...and EVH did for a while oh wait... off topic hell if our playing just my "small" gig's just get an amp modeler effects processor and run it through the house system lines 6 pod or my fav digitech RP250 the rp is great amp models , effects ,expression pedal, usb out for recording, can also be ran through a P.A. ...all this for a $150 bucks just my thoughts but yeah like gene said marshel ,crate , and peavey are great amps...
leedsquietman	Date: May 12, 2008 @ 1:02 AM Fender's amps are pretty good too IMHO. But I had a Peavey Rage practise amp and it was great. The Roland cube amps are also sweet for smaller amps. It depends a lot on the tone you're looking for and how much money you'd spend. I love the sound of Orange amplifiers but they cost a ton. And you should always buy a more powerful amp than you need, they sound better at low values and do future proof you a bit in terms of you might be playing in your basement now, but soon you might be getting booked to play larger size bars/halls, where a 20 watt amp won't cut it.
evansorchid	Date: May 12, 2008 @ 3:11 AM Many moons ago I use to have a Peavey Deuce Amp that I completely abused. It's made for playing a guitar through, but I would plug in my electric bass through it in the garage during jam/practice sessions and then set it on top of milk crates directly behind the drummer, because he couldn't hear it unless it was directly behind him. The amp had this old style box coil reverb that would make the most horrendous sound when the amp fell off the milk crates. We dropped that amp so many times, many times actually landing on the drummer, that I had to discard the box/shell part of the amp, leaving only the head and speakers. I eventually upgraded to a Peavey Combo 300 Bass Amp which was so loud and powerful that it could easily play most small clubs without being miked, and I took much better care of it, but thinking about that first Peavey Deuce always brings a smile to my face.
zedsalt	Date: May 12, 2008 @ 3:25 AM I just LOVED the Reverend amps with the Schizo switch (3 different sets of preamp/poweramp tubes), especially the low-wattage model ("bigger" sounds at lower volumes). By the time I put the money together for a new one, though, they stopped making them! Nothing against their guitars and basses, but I really thought those amps were going to turn Reverend into the next Mesa Engineering.
GeneHilbert	Date: May 12, 2008 @ 3:30 AM I have two Pod Pro racks, a Johnson JStation, Roland GS/6, Ensoniq DP/4 & D/P 2, inline with an ADA MicroCab Cabinet simulator, and a Peavey Rock Master Tube pre. These are great for the studio, and I use the Pods live in my solo shows. But for a band gig, you need a good quality amp; 80 to 100 watts are perfect. I've tried every combination of running a rack unit through an amp w/a PA feed. The tone blows. The digital signal is to flat & narrow, just too compressed. They just don't breath - and they can't produce the mojo. I’ve even tried the Digitech floor units, same thing - flat and narrow. Dial in a good amp with analog pedals, and your ass is in tone heaven.
Distilled1	Date: May 12, 2008 @ 5:46 AM I always liked my Peavey for smaller amps, and that box spring reverb on the older ons YEAH!!! I still use a peavy stereo chorus I bought at a pawn shop for 150USD back in the early 90's and if your looking for a good solid state smaller 80-100watt amp, I suggest most peavys for a decent Rock sound that is still versatile. really check out used gear and pawn shops most of the amps by peavey are rock solid and will take one hell of a beating (I don't know about new ones)

I have played through a 15watt Orange that kicked ass, and my Marshall Bluebreaker is 30watts and I did pay $1600.00 for that. I would have to play it to be sold, but in the studio it sounds like it would be a screamer.

Distilled1	Date: May 12, 2008 @ 6:51 PM IT tears up the Marshall for the sound, but I am parshal to laney its kinda a Marshall yeah? , I had a micro marshal that I gave away as it was crap, and I am a les Paul/Marshall guy thats what I live for till I found my Laney!
killoFunk	Date: May 13, 2008 @ 2:22 PM If you take a look at my images, you'll see "the golden tone". It is an old Orpheum from ... late 50's early 60's... can't find much info on it BUT... it's only like ... 10-14 watts, all tube! I played small clubs with a full band for two or three years with this amp, front-ended with a trace elliot EQ and a Carl Martin compressor. Plenty loud enough cranked all the way open. Back off the guitar vol and you have rythm tones from heaven at just the right vol. we were playing blues and funk, no metal... but, every night a guitar player would come and ask about the amp... slobbering... this sold me on the idea that 100 watts in most clubs is TOO MUCH... you never get to hear what the power amp is doing... just the pre. might as well run S.S.(yuk). Granted, we were playing blues and funk, no metal, but it is perfect for that type of thing... 15 to 20 watts is plenty... crank one open at practice and see for yourself... kF http://files.dmusic.com/music/b/r/brett_snively//Orpheum1.jpg
zedsalt	Date: May 14, 2008 @ 3:48 AM There are a lot of old cool amps out there that can provide what I think of as kind of a Tone Holy Grail- something that sounds distinctly different from any of the "classics", but is still very musical. A bud of mine told me to look for any guitar amp with an extra input labeled "Harmonica" or "Harp". And, of course, most of your REALLY HUGE tones from the classic Arena Rock albums were a combination of amps, often one big, rich-sounding amp paired with a nasty little grumbler.
