Veracohr	Date: July 31, 2003 @ 8:28 PM To be honest, I have to say that ProTools sucks. The Digi 001s preamps and converters, I have heard, leave much to be desired. I imagine the MBox can't be any better. The 002 may be better, and it does have that nifty control surface (unless you get the rack version), but you're still dealing with ProTools. I suggest a native system instead.

I would agree that it will sound better if you use it more of an editor and recorder than an effects processor i,e, patch out into outboard gear for better effects, etc. But the preset stuff included is pretty ok.

I have a TDM system in my studio, and an 001 and mBox at home. I like them all, and I plan to stick with Pro Tools for ever. I agree with leflaw, about using outboard gear, but with all the new plugins comming out for Pro Tools 6, that won't be neccisary in a year. I was just reading a news article that said AES reported that 90% of all audio you hear(movies, dvd's, audio cd's, radio, tv etc) has in someway been edited in Pro Tools at one point. Every professional studio has a pro tools rig in it, so if you plan to make a career in audio you should definatly be familiar with it, not to let alone the compatibility you will have with the rest of the world, when it comes to you music/projects etc. Another unique feature about Pro Tools is Digidesign's Rocket Network, which lets you colaborate on Pro Tool session files from around the world simultiously. I recorded a band a couple weeks ago, who's singer was in Australia for the month. We laid down drums, bass, guitar, etc, on my TDM system, then just synced up with a studio in Austraila and got the vocals while they were being recorded in Austrialia. Everything was so seamless, despite the fact she was across the planet. Try doing that with a different recording system. As for Veracohr, All digidesign products have Focusrite preamps, which are the best in thier price range. This includes the mBox which has two of them. You can try pro tools free, it's an 8track version of the software that doesn't require any hardware, and can be downloaded for free at digidesign.com. While I agree that most of the studios out there have protools, it has more to do with length of availability more than it's sound or useability. Digidesign started way back in '91 with the session 8 system on PC. While several of the other units at that time were just as good, they did not stand the test of time. So digidesign has forged it's nitch in the audio world. Cubase VST, Cakewalk, and Voyetra didn't get with the audio recording until late 95. By 97 Cubase and Cakewalk had come up to the track standards of ProTools, but didn't have the dsp capabilities that you could get out of the protools system with farm cards. So fx were used, but not a lot from within the software. The midi functionality, which is what Cubase and Cakewalk were known for, surpassed Protools by a longshot. But Protools was still the reighning king in the studios. Most because of it's inherant ability to lock to the old DA88. This was killer for movie soundtracks, but was very rarely used in studios for music. Most of the studios at that time were either still using Tape or they were using Adats. By 2000 and 2001 IDE drives got faster and IDE raid controllers became availalbe so it was no longer necessary to have expensive SCSI drives and controllers. In fact that Promise fasttrak controller knocked single SCSI drives and controller system way out of the box. The IDE raids gave you serious sustained data throughput while outdoing storage of SCSI almost 5 to 1. Virtual instruments were making there way onto the scene in 98 and got really good by 2000. By 2001 Sample playback units in virtual instrument form could play some serious multi-layered samples, like drums and violins and such. Protools was lagging in this area big time. Most of the guys that wanted to use these system got PC's to run Gigasampler as a sound module. Steinberg, from 97 to 2000 had been making their Nuendo Program as a direct competitor to Protools, along with Paris. While Paris is a killer system, it doesn't have the market share that Protools and Cubase have. Nuendo is now making it's way into the movie soundtrack arena. In fact with the new Nuendo 2.0 the only thing that will keep Protools in the box is the fact that most of these studios have spent so much money on dsp farm cards, SCSI drive systems and expensive Macs. Sound wise, you can get the same quality out of a killer PC, SX and the Waves Plugins with VST instruments from makers like Native Instruments and Edirol. ProTools is finally getting on board with the VSTi's. but they still don't have the support that you find with SX and Cakewalk. All reality, the only thing I can see that is the difference is cost. SX, Nuendo and Cakewalk can do the same thing with the same quality, if you know how to be a good engineer, that you can get from Protools. But it will do it with a lot less hardware needed. That makes them a lot cheaper. Function for function, protools doesn't compare to SX or Nuendo. The only reason to buy a protools system is to be compatible with the recording house, cause they do have more Mac/Protools systems than PC based SX/Cakewalk systems. But you can buy with using Nuendo because it will export files using the Open media format (OMF). then Protools can read it and vice versa.
