so I've heard people trashing nvidia, but what I
want to know is why are they so bad, and what
would you recomend instead?

a) DirectX9. THEY'RE FUCKING CRIPPLED!
Go to
anandtech.com and tomshardware.com (who happens
to've been BIASED to nvidia). The benchmarks
speak for themselves.
b) ATI. The ATI Radeon 9600 Pro, is currently one
of the _best_ buys you can get.

I personally don't think there bad. As with any
thing, it has its advantages, and its
disadvantages. For the most part is comes down
to brand loyalty. It is like comparing Intel and
AMD. It is futile.
But Thaspian is right. If you are in the market
for a new video card, the Radeon 9600 Pro is a
good bet. It is the same price as the GeForce FX
5600, and the Radeon benchmarks higher.

Browse from there to the video card benchmarks.
