I really don't have anything pertinent to say about this thread, but I couldn't resist the impulse to respond to Pog's response to a thread about a recent lack of comments, in which Pog commented about musicians being reduced to starting threads that talk about how no one is talking about music anymore.
smooka	Date: February 27, 2005 @ 12:55 PM I wasn't reduced to anything, but hey we all have opinions. I personally don't have problems getting comments. I see the comments that are made are all too simliar and people seem to stay within there social circles. people are so quick to promote but never go out and show themselves what a comment can mean to them. I respect people bieng busy. my thread wasn't meant for everyone. I just was curious to see what other people think that I don't normally talk to.

Leflaw (the Big cheeze of Dmusic) say that that Smooka is "wrong", How ignorant! Leflaw the guy with 35 artist comments, Wow, what a champion. You and You alone are the reason why Dmusic is going around and around in circles. Stand up and get some respnsible Leadership happening in this place, and then you may get somewhere with it. but until then Leflaw, don't go around telling people they are "wrong" unless you can finish the statement and tell him why you rthink he is wrong. Jerk!!!!!!!.

Woof	Date: February 27, 2005 @ 10:24 PM A tough subject to address, to be sure... and also one that's been on a lot of peoples' minds over the last year. Of course, folks seem to like getting comments... and the people who leave them are usually very positive and constructive... and I think that the community in general appreciates that. That said, it does seem that artists who are more socially interactive, reap a lot of comments. Not that there's anything wrong with that... comments are as much a means of interaction, as sending notes and leaving shouts. Of course, everybody's interested in what other artists think of their work. And of course, artists who haven't got much of a visible presence in the community aren't going to be interacted with much. Furthermore, while digging through the bins, etc., for the vocal pop radio, I came across a healthy number of artists who just plain weren't active here at all anymore, but whose songs were absolutely ace material... and they made it onto the playlist anyway, 'cause the songs themselves were so good. Guess what? For however long these now-long-lost artists were here, they'd reaped precious few comments! (2 0r 3 was the average per song). However, I have more of a point to make than that... I've also found plenty of fresh talent here, who also doesn't appear to be garnering much praise because they aren't very active in community participation. IMHO, that makes commenting, be it deep and analytical, or simply something like "Great song! I loved this!" not exactly a perfect gauge of what's actually great material... but rather a gauge of acceptance of the artist as a whole. "I loved your song" is equally as valid of a comment to me, as "The guitar technique is restrained yet articulate and moving, the percussion has grace and drive and that snare knocked me out, plus the vocal processing has a sinister edge to it that drew me right into the lyric". Not everybody writes the same way... and if somebody gets off on what an artist has done, I'm sure everybody does what they can to articulate that. And it's all very appreciated. Finally, just over the last month or two, any number of artists here, both well-known and less familiar to the community, have uploaded at least a couple of dozen tracks that show incredible creativity, talent, and/or chops! And so there's plenty of musical nourishment here at DMusic, as far as I'm concerned. Comments or not.

IMO, this is the best site out there—(Leflaw, see me after the show) ---I have to wonder just what you are looking for----me---NOTHING is the answer. I want absolutely nothing from any of you unless you particularly want to give it!!!! I come here to listen to great music, have good conversations that range from serious to absurd and to post whatever “art---if you will” that happens to drip out of my soul. I like it here ----“ Not that there's anything wrong with that...” How’s that for social interaction? We are the world…………
Jesuszilla	Date: February 28, 2005 @ 4:56 AM Without the old charts it seems harder for new tracks to get listened to, despite the current top listens and most recently uploaded bits. I remember I wanted the charts to be removed because they were broken for ages, and even before that the songs in chart didn't move about much. What I think would be cool is to have a chart like the old one, with that thing where the new tracks go near the top even if they don't get played at first. I also think there should be a time limit on how long a track can stay in the chart, that way it's always got new stuff in it. What do you think? Also, what about how often it updates? Once every 24 hours perhaps, with most played at top? Was it once every hour before, can't remember. When the charts were working they were the best way to browse through music I thought.

pog	Date: February 28, 2005 @ 1:06 PM This makes me think that maybe it would be good to see beside a song where exactly on the charts that a users song is.... a lot of us don't frequent the charts because it often doesn't seem relevant. I know I've spent a few minutes looking through the charts to see if any of my songs have in fact been nominated and given up because it's comparable to looking for a needle in a haystack. It would also be a handy guage to see which songs by an artist are more popular and in the long run, create more movement in the charts. I agree with in that people often put little effort into commenting on people's songs and I can also see how it could accidentally be read as the forums are just full of promo's and nothing else... which in itself is not completely true, but how can shaker be calling people a Jerk ??? It's comments like that that are imho whats making this place go around in circles... been there, done that, bite ya bum.

There's been unpleasantness and misundertandings in relation to negative comments, or if you make a positive comment then you run the risk of being called a sycophant I guess that puts many people off making a comment at all. Maybe we should take a look at how the comments system operates, and also how artists can be more effectively promoted.

Woof	Date: February 28, 2005 @ 8:11 PM Well, Gary... you've got a pretty well-established presence here by now, and so I doubt that would have much of an effect... an interesting experiment to try, though! Rodrica makes an interesting point... I've seen folks asking for comments. However, to then question the "quality" of comments they receive in return seems strange... 'cause as Ime mentioned, they're supposed to be a gift of appreciation from one artist to another, not a payment in advance for return praise. Seriously... what other purpose should they serve? Personally, I'd feel extremely uncomfortable commenting on work that I didn't get into, just because I felt I owed it to another artist. Furthermore, I'm VERY comfortable commenting on songs I truly love, or find promising, regardless of whether or not the artist is around much... once in a while, they actually show up at my place and find something that they like in return... and that means a heck of a lot, 'cause I never would have expected that! Besides, if an artist is looking to become popular, being popular with other artists on this site only goes so far... it's not like we're all gonna go right out and buy each others' CD's (although some do). In addition, every artist here has their own work to promote. I think it's pretty unlikely that they're going to put that aside, and go about promoting somebody else's work ahead of their own. Not to mention, riding on a popular artists' coattails is shoddy behavior... if folks are indeed attempting to do something like that, they would have their own conscience to contend with... and that's reason enough not to do it. In summation, y'all know who you are, and why you say what you do about this song or that. If your motives are decent and sincere, WHO CARES what anybody thinks? And to Jesuszilla... check the "Newbies" forum every so often... I've found some really cool stuff that way!
