layer3.org? And what's with mp3.com these days, looks like friggin yahoo (so does winamp.com wtf!)? If anyone reads this, I'm actually interested in getting back in the scene and building a collection once again. The last time I ripped an mp3, LAME (don't remember version) was the supposedly the best encoder(I think I still have it on my old PC) as opposed to the "corporate" all-in-ones like Musicmatch and everyone seemed to think MP3 192 VBR was the way to go. What's the word on encoders, formats (wma, acc, mp3), and players (I don't even know anymore, is winamp still decent?). This is a tall order, but I've been away for a long time, and don't really want to start scouring websites all over the place looking for info. thx." id="1274">Wow. Just a couple years out of the mp3 scene and look how things have changed. I haven't been to dmusic in years. It looks so different! I remember Mr. Winamp himself (Justin, is it?) used to to chat here quite a bit, along with a certain NAD creator (I remember him calling himself "Sexo" something or another... great player(NAD), but I suspect it's outdated by now). Is dmusic one of the only sites left? What the hell happened to layer3.org ? And what's with mp3.com these days, looks like friggin yahoo (so does winamp.com wtf!)? PS - Did anyone catch the Airplane! humor?" id="1284">Spyed said it all too well...we're the survivors. The mp3 scene is nothing like it was a couple of years ago...it's not a whole new ball game...its a whole new sport all together..."It's a whole new sport!"

Except... the mp3 scene was always about two or three things.
1) first and foremost, getting music.
2) freeing artists from labels, so they could make money without anyones help and avoid all the middle men.
3) it was just cool. and any software or hardware that had anything to do with it was cool too.
So what's left? Well, (3) is probably gone in most respects.. all the good stuff was developed. (2) ... well it's still about two, but that's not as much fun for the actual COMMUNITY per say.. or is it?
And then there's (1). See downloading music is getting harder and harder every day... and that whole fight will get interesting again real soon.. when morpheus is gone, etc. People all got used to getting music using p2p.. and all that will be left is gnutella.. which is not exactly efficient right now. So it'll be a bit of a battle.. I think in the coming months, community will begin to form again.... and it will happen right here at DMusic. Primarily because there's no where else for people to go... who's going to get you the answers?
Anyway, I'm proud of this heap of code... we've worked hard on it over the past SIX years. During the peak of the corporate frenzy we didn't do so well because we probably didn't position our selves well but... we survived when everyone else crashed!DMusic is coming back with a vengeance baby; you'll see.

It's really cool to see how many generations have come before us... this is like the third or fourth generation of DMers.... I feel so insignificant and small...

I didn't recognize tp33's screenname, so I figured this was someone expressing surprise that any site lasted this long after a "redesign". Words like that and phrases like "complete site overhaul" almost always pop up a VERY short time before the death of a website. The fact that DM, severely diminished but not entirely destroyed, continues, says a lot about the people here.

Yep, new design, new ownership, lots of turbulence. Hard to believe that was over 6 years ago...
