Is this acoustic guitar worth £300?

Is there maybe a diffrent kind I could get for the same price or less? I hear that Yamaha do some very nice acoustic too.

sqrlcub	Date: May 24, 2006 @ 5:41 PM It's hard to say without actually playing one. If you are just looking for a brand name guitar, you pay for that name more than you pay for the quality (the Martin Guitar conundrum... ie, they are enormously overpriced for the quality that you get until you start shelling out for the highest end models). A guitar in the 600-800 dollar (american dollar which is roughly equivalent to your 300-450 quid) should have a fairly round sound. In classical guitars, they should be warm and not so bright sounding, moderate projection, and will probably have a significant weight to them. In an acousitic (steel stringed) instrument, you should have a sound that is really bright that projects well with a pick. Neither will have the robustness of a higher end quality guitar. Also, the instrument, should feel comfortable in your hands (assuming you are average height), have playable action, and not buzz on any note when played in first position. A lesser quality guitar will be cheaper and lack some of the above. A better quality guitar will have a more refined sound, possibly some artistic embellishments (like a very nicely inlaid rosette and perhaps some scrollwork or a figurehead). There should be a definate quality difference in the sound compared to the previous instruments, if there is not, then you are either paying for a name (aka the previous Martin conundrum) or you just got swindled.

hueseph	Date: May 25, 2006 @ 1:12 AM Tanglewood has a good name. Still every guitar is different regardless of name or model number. There's no set rule as to how a stee or nylon string should sound. Some flamenco guitarists prefer a brighter tone some flatpickers want a darker tone. I think ideally most guitarist want a balanced tone regardless of the type of guitar. Try one out. How does it play? Do you like the tone? Take it out of the nice wood panelled "acoustic" room and see if it still sounds good. Do the frets buzz? Is the bracing in tact? Do you hear any ominous rattling? Be scrutinous.
