Harmonic Bend

ThePurified1	Date: July 28, 2006 @ 7:06 PM Alrighty,any of you guys know how to do a harmonic bend? That's what I was told it's called at least. It sounds so cool but I can't find a way to do it or figure it out. I know Dimebag Darell does it and Dan Donegan from disturbed does, it's in the bridge into the second verse of "Stricken" if you need to know what I'm talking about. Thanks.
evansorchid	Date: July 28, 2006 @ 7:33 PM I'm going to assume that you know how to get harmonics by lightly touching your finger to the string above the 5th, 7th, 12th or 19th frets and playing the string with your other hand. I haven't heard the song that you're referring to so I'm just going by the description of a 'harmonic bend'. But, he might be using a modulation pitch wheel MIDI thing routed through his set up....or bending behind the nut.....or whammy bar? Or are you talking about that trick where if you hold your pick just right you can lightly touch the string with the tip of the same finger that is holding the pick as you pluck it and make a harmonic-like sound. Billy Gibbons did that all the freaking time.
guitaroo	Date: July 28, 2006 @ 7:43 PM Here's what you do: If you are trying to do a harmonic bend on the third fret of the g string, put your finger there like normal. Pick the string like normal EXCEPT go to the same note on the same string so the 15th fret and pic it there. I hope that made sense.
ThePurified1	Date: July 29, 2006 @ 1:32 AM ^Kinda, You mean play it on the first note and as qiuckly as you can go to the second? I'm not sure, do you bend it tthen? Dan Donegan doesn't us a whammy bar or anything else, I'm sure, I seen him live and just stood there and did it . . .
Alecs	Date: July 29, 2006 @ 9:03 AM here's what I think you're trying to do: To get this sound, you need to sound a harmonic with your picking hand. It's a typical metal thing. What you do is pick the note like normal and barely let your thumb hit the string on the way through. This is hard to explain with out being there to show you. Think of it the same way as a natural harmoic (7th,5th,12th fret etc) but instead of a left hand finger determining the pitch, it's your right hand thumb. From there, after you pick it, you can bend or manipulate the note any way you want. Drop me a note if you have any more questions
zedsalt	Date: July 29, 2006 @ 11:28 AM Are we talking about hitting an artificial harmonic, then bending the string? A lot of folks stretch a finger out ahead of their pick or picking fingers (usually five, seven, or twelve frets beyond the fret they're on), picking up the harmonic finger while striking the string with a pick or their other fingers, but I use my knuckles BEHIND the picking fingers. It's just what I fell into naturally.
EvilPicnic	Date: July 29, 2006 @ 11:32 AM A pinch harmonic. Basically just clip the string with your right hand thumb as you play a note normally, which you can then bend or add vibrato too or whatever. The standard technique is to use your thumb, but you can use any part of your hand really. As you try it and practice you start to pick up where your right hand needs to be to find the best nodes. This involves moving the hand around the picking area, which can seem odd at first.
