I Hate The RIAA!
Your takes on the RIAA

Hello, my name is Charles Ma, and I am a sophomore
currently writing a social issues research paper.
In my research, I have been
trying to contact many independent musicians and
find their individual takes on
the issue of copyright infringement. If you would
be so kind as to take a few
seconds from your time, and answer the following
questions, it would be much
appreciated. If you would like to remain
anonymous, please state so. Thank you
in advance.
1) Have the actions of the RIAA affected your
exposure to the public? If so, in
what way?
2) Have peer-to-peer programs and file sharing in
general affected your exposure
to the public? If so, in what way?
3) If you found your work "illegally" featured on
a peer-to-peer site or
program, what would be your reaction?
4) Do you believe that the RIAA is right in the
principle of combating copyright
infringement?
5) How do you feel about the manner in which the
RIAA is dealing with the issue
of copyright infringement?
6) Do you believe that there are alternative,
less controversial, and generally
more effective way to deal with copyright
infringement? If so, what?
Once again, I thank you for your time.

I may be too independent to be useful, but I'm
bored, so you're getting my responses.
1. No. I live under a rock.
2. Not to my knowledge.
3. I'd be thrilled that someone liked my music
enough to share it.
4. I believe the RIAA has the right to try to
combat copyright infringement. However, I don't
believe that it's in their best interest.
5. Suing your customer base is never a sound
business practice.
6. Yes. I would adopt a "do nothing" policy. File
sharing is free advertising. Sure, some people
abuse it, but that's more than made up for by the
many more people who use P2P networks to find
good music. This enables them to buy more music,
knowing beforehand that all of it is good.
