Anti-RIAA rock song seeks to spread the word!

fitehouse	Date: January 19, 2004 @ 4:59 PM Our band, Fitehouse, has just released an anti-RIAA rock anthem entitled "Running Scared." We are hoping to spread the word beyond "the choir." To do this we are releasing the tune under a modified GNU public license -- yup, we are battling the RIAA with open source music! The concept seems to be resonating in academic circles where we've gotten good coverage in University newspapers. The song was accompanied by a 12 postcard propaganda campaign sent to approximately 1,700 media contacts (alternative papers, college newspapers, national public radio programs and independent radio). We decided to fight the RIAA with creativity -- something they seem to lack. We are hoping to get dmusic folks to do their own versions of the song (either re-mixes, or totally new versions). We hope to gather as many versions as possible so as to come out with another press release hailing open source music as a viable option for musical development. Our message is that it is the music that matters -- obviously an open source "giveaway" goes against everything the RIAA represents. teledyn	Date: February 29, 2004 @ 3:38 PM Sometimes I find the whole high-polarity anti-RIAA thing gets tedious, starts to drift into zeolotism, starts to drive people away; I'm not against the RIAA, but I'm not for them either --- they just move in a whole realm of reality that I don't need and don't buy. Sure they use nasty tactics out of greed-based motives, but nasty greed-driven tactics doesn't stop everyone I know from using Microsoft software to create their tracks! Whatever. In Zwahili there are two words for propaganda. One is 'propaganda' that is rhetoric proclaiming how evil our enemies are, the other is 'quahare' that proclaims how great _we_ are. DMusic is great, the music on DMusic is great and the free flow of trade-friendly MP3s is great. We are better than that old model of saving up to buy last year's tracks, we are now, we are hit and we are the real music. I'd rather the RIAA just whither away and die because they are irrelevent, because nobody needs them anymore, because the whole CD-units-shipped industry dried up like 78's, obsolete, forgotten, something in stories told by grandparents during fishing trips. While I never recorded it, I wrote a music-copyleft pro-filetrading song for Lawrence Lessig that he graciously posted to his weblog (see http://www.lessig.org/blog/archives/000385.shtml) --- if anyone does record it, I'd love to hear it!

Open Source Music could really encourage creativity, especially in kids who are getting short-changed in the school systems with the fund cuts in the arts (music).
