Woof	Date: April 17, 2004 @ 1:12 AM I guess I'd just like to make mention here, that I thought for a long time about using Linux... but still am not. Heck, the last two PC's that we bought, came with Windows already installed on 'em for free... 2000 pro is still my favorite, but XP isn't too bad... the thing is, I really don't feel like I've ever paid for an OS... and don't use Microsoft stuff if it can possibly be helped. They're coming up with all these add-ons to Windows, and other than Word, I find all of 'em completely unnecessary... I've found loads of third party software, that runs on Windows, that I love. Some of it's freeware, a lot of it isn't. It's not cheap, but it's not bad. So... having said that, I've just gotta ask... how does Mr. Gates stay so rich, when the OS is just given away, for the most part? Heck... you can find people selling their old Win98 discs at flea markets! Point being, Windows is a standard, it's cheap and easy to use... there's practically no learning curve. Until another OS becomes that convenient, I think it'll most likely stay the favorite of programmers, but will remain primarily, a source of confusion to the general public. Building kernels, and command line, is just waaaaay more than most folks are used to doing, to get a working OS. I'm not trying to be down on Linux. I'm just saying that something that's easy to use, and familiar, seems to be more welcomed, even if it crashes every three months. It's a tradeoff a lot of folks are willing to make, for the sake of convenience. Guess I'm sorta playing devil's advocate here, 'cause I'd like to hear the counter arguments.
pog	Date: April 17, 2004 @ 2:56 AM Hmmm... well, I've used windows for a long time, and I've had the opportunity to use Debian linux (set up by someone who knew what he was doing) and I've tried redhat linux ... which sucked a bit cos it didn't even have codecs to play mp3s installed... and I've used madrake linux... which was kinda cool. Once a linux box is set up properly, I think I kicks the crap outta windows. For one, if you wish to install a program under linux, you install just the program... the program bundles are often about 300k in size, and the equivalent under windows is about 2-3 megs in size, simply because the windows installers are bundled into the exe's, whereas the linux installers are in the o.s.... not to mention the extra bloat that comes with windows products. The only real issues that I found with linux is that it can be confusing and frustrating trying to find the correct libraries to make each application work. Sometimes it takes a quite a while to figure out how to install the apps. On the other hand, windows is never free... it's bundled into the price of computers on sale in the stores. If you purchased the pc without the o.s, it'll save you a few hundred dollars, and if you build it yourself, even more. I agree that windows is easier to install, but the problem here is that windows has to figure out every possible combination of every possible hardware, and more often than not, it gets something wrong, hence the instabilities that windows tends to have. I agree that it's easier to have a windows box that crashes occasionally, but at least you can run everything on it... but I also wish I could have debian linux pre-installed on a system ... or even both linux and windows. On one hand you can have a potential loss of data under windows... not a good concept for recording that timeless track in your home studio if it goes corrupt on ya... on the other, it's a major biatch figuring out how to install your favorite software, even if it has been ported to your linux o.s. And so the pro's and con's of each o.s. make them all good, yet sucky at the same time. And don't anyone even mention apple... the have naff-all m ouse buttons/wheels.
Distilled1	Date: April 18, 2004 @ 5:13 AM I want a mac although I really have been trying to build a dual os box win98/Linux but I am to W/computers I really like this 3.1ghz xp hite box for 399.00 I have cant build the same for that. and XP hasent done me wrong yet I found tho keep WIN running never shut the damn thing off just run it non stop! I would love some help finding a good open sorce Linux os to DL to play with one of my old boxs.

Woof	Date: April 20, 2004 @ 3:04 AM I think you're right about it being a toss-up at the moment, Pog... Both OS'es have something going for, and also against 'em... As for the future, that's going to be a different story... and that's where I think Linux stands a chance of being something great. Here's why. Windows is increasingly becoming more and more like spyware, adware, and big brotherware... the next version, due out sometime in '05, will take the concept even further... the file management system, as I understand it, is designed explicitly so that the web and the OS work in conjunction... and that sounds to me like it's just sending an open invitation to hackers and the like, to compromise security and privacy. If, on the other hand, Linux can go in the other direction, and also work on being more compatible with Windows third party software, I can see a lot of folks gravitating to it, out of necessity. Security, privacy, and anonymity on the web, would be core issues that the OS would need to focus on, to accomplish this. So far, I habven't seen much in open source, for dealing with things like this. Nothing that works very well, anyway... even Mozilla's lacking in the ability to clean up its' own tracks, without going into menu heirarchies and purging the cookies and cache... something third-party tools do very easily for IE. I don't know from Linux firewalls and antivirus programs... are they any good? Anyhow, that's the direction I'd go, given my druthers... but first, I'd have to be able to run my favorite software on the OS, as well... they've made a good start, by making it Photoshop compatible... but there's more to be done, for sure...
