GRC.com - anyone heard of it?

Buzzard909	Date: February 8, 2005 @ 2:51 PM It was a site I used to visit a while back to read about the latest holes and other assorted issues with MS operating systems and to also check out some fantastic apps that help maintain the computer. Well, they had an app called the DCOMbobulator - it basically closed a potential exploit in Windows (go read, i am too lazy to explain) and several other applications. I just wondered if anyone else ever visited that site because in all the time I have been there, its been apparant MS dont get on too well with them - then again, would you if you were Bill Gates and someone knew your OS better than you? Anyhows, my issue is i cannot even download that file now - my virus definitions, fully working and updated a couple of days ago, suddenly decided Steve Gibson's apps (the author of GRC.com) to be hacktools and deleted them Makes me wonder if MS are playing underhand tactics - and how far they are going now, since the AV i used isnt MS based or owned at all
wet1	Date: February 8, 2005 @ 4:18 PM MS is throughly capable of playing underhanded tricks. I have used some of the GRC apps, more to help others than for help myself. It is often easier to say go download this and use it than it is to tell them the path to get to some of the parts where changes are needed. I am sure that Microsoft has a problem with the GRC site. Here are folks saying "Here is another hole to patch or look at" and MS is trying to heist off the idea its software is secure. We all know that not to be the case or so many patches would not be necessary. Anytime a software dominates the world market, you can be sure that will be looked at with a fine toothed comb for what can be taken advantage of by unscruplous parties. Happens all the time. You might check your anti-virus settings. So have places that disallow hack tools and will delete them or disconnect the app. Depends on the antivirus. Some of the spyware apps also have this feature. MS is not above sliding something into your updates either without telling you the full story. Many will have some reference to it in a out of the way place. Something you gotta hunt to find out about. I don't let this computer connect to Microsucks on its own. If it goes there, I wanna know about and before it does, not after.

Thaspian	Date: February 8, 2005 @ 9:25 PM I've heard about it. I dislike it. If one of your ports is closed instead of being stealthed, which is no security risk, it marks you as failing. It's great to see if I have any open, but I wouldn't use it as a benchmark for my security.

pog	Date: February 9, 2005 @ 12:56 AM I've seen a port closed instead of stealth on a client's pc... the trouble with this is I can't quite figure out if it's being closed by their isp, or it's an un-opened port-knocking hole. GRC has always been pretty good, but I havn't heard of any software deleting their software to date.
wet1	Date: February 9, 2005 @ 3:25 AM Mostly, I don't use the GRC tools. Rather I use TDS3, a crippleware is available free on the net to test ports to see if they are open or closed. Tcp and udp for all 65,535 ports. I use a firewall to turn them on or off. While it has been some time since I have been to GRC site, it seems that I remember it being a bit simplistic in only going to port 5000 and on only tcp while doing a probe of your security.
wet1	Date: February 9, 2005 @ 3:31 AM Reason I bring up this 5000 port number is that most of your basic functions are taken by 5000 and lower. Most spyware, trojans, backdoors, and the like will communicate at far above 5000.
