Codec issues

As with a previous thread here, my WMP10 codecs
don't work since I installed the DefilerPak. I
uninstall DP, reinstall WMP 10, nothing works.
I have VLC and several other media players, and
they work fine, but the plugins for firefox are
all messed up. Also, most of the MS apps use the
WMP codecs, so I can't put video in PowerPoint,
for example. (I use Flash instead anyway)
Any idea what I could do? I've been having this
trouble for months, and I really want my codecs
back to normal!

Sad to say you are like many others working with
the "fine" works that have been patented and then
protected to the point that they are a hassel to
use for what you really want to. Expect to see
yet more of this as the new Longhorn comes out
for an OS. Personally I don't want the thing.
This is just like the DRM embedded in purchased
digital downloads. All it does is create
headaches for the buyer when the buyer then
wants to use his personal purchase his way. More
and more I find that I am less on the side of
these huge corporations that want to protect to
death their products till the user can't actually
use it for anything reasonable. The whole concept
of the computer was that it was multifunctional.
That what you do with your computer isn't
necessarily what the next guy does with it.
I am sorry this doesn't answer your question or
address your problem but more and more I am
seeing just such as you have encountered. Not
because the machine won't do it but because
protectionism is rampant in todays
megacorporations.
Sorry for the rant.

The trouble with codec packs is they install the
codec without checking the codec is or isn't
already there so if it tries to install a new
codec on a system that already has it installed,
it breaks the existing one. Sure they work on a
system with no codecs installed, and are even
configurable if you know what codecs you have
installed, but if you don't know what's
installed, the packs can often make a big ol'
mess
The fact that the packs are being written by home
based users who make the packs to get the job
done, not as a commercially available product.
There is little testing and compatability tests
carried out before release.
If you decide to install the packages required to
play different formats as you require them, then
often you are leaving yourself open to the
corporate fat cats monitoring your every move,
which presents many privacy concerns.
If for example, you are making a powerpoint
presentation that is an idea for a revolutionary,
ground breaking product, and you were part of the
RI**, looking for copyright infringements, would
it not be human nature to have a little peek to
make sure someone isn't preparing a presentation
that has a potential to overthrow your empire ?
