Music and dreams...

wailingmiserere	Date: April 28, 2005 @ 12:31 PM Just wondered if this ever happens to anyone else... sometimes I wake up and have music going round and round in my head, or I dream about music and 'see' it (either written out in a score, or in shapes and colours). I've never really used the music in my dreams for writing songs with though, mainly because I usually forget it shortly after I wake up. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else experiences this, and if so, whether or not you make a point of trying to record the music before you forget it.

kingo	Date: April 28, 2005 @ 5:21 PM Once I dreamed up this band called Halaka, and they had like 80,000,000 songs. So I got some people to record them all. Then I woke up. Then I couldn't figure out if I was woke up or asleep. So I went to bed. Then I woke up again, which didn't make any sense, cuz I couldn't remember going to sleep.
koiulpoi	Date: April 28, 2005 @ 9:38 PM Go to my site and listen to Dreaming in Black. I was half asleep. A vision came before me (I mean, I was hallucinating, but I had taken no drugs). It was of these two people standing in front of a burning orange sun, a man and a woman. They pushed each other away and left. Then, that song just jumped into my head. I had to get to school the next morning, so I didn't write it then. So, I wrote in my journal a bunch of scribbles that related to the notes, and wrote it at 6 the next morning. Good story.
zedsalt	Date: April 29, 2005 @ 12:22 PM I always keep pen and paper at bedside for just such an emergency, and I've gotten out of bed a few times and immediately recorded a melody (had to. I'm basically illiterate when it comes to music theory). The real benefit for me, though, has been not so much in the creative process as in recall. I've often agonized over trying to remember something in my waking life, only to have it appear in a book or on a piece of paper in a dream. Now, up to this point, I'm IN the dream in the strictest sense, but at that moment, I say to myself, "I'd better wake up and write that down!" More often than not, I don't even remember doing it until I see the scribble on my notepad in the morning. I've been trying to dream lucidly...be aware that I'm dreaming and exercise control over the dream...but all of the sensory info fades every time I try to affect things. Are there any lucid dreamers here? Any tips on what I might be doing wrong?
Apertome	Date: April 29, 2005 @ 1:35 PM I used to have lucid dreams all the time without trying to. I don't know how or why it happened, but it did. I've never explicitly tried to do it, so I can't really offer any advice. Now, I hardly dream at all, and I have no idea why. And it's even more rare that I'll remember anything from any of my dreams except, at best, a mood. It's actually quite infuriating. Where's the dream repairman?
warmguns	Date: April 29, 2005 @ 11:53 PM I had a weird-ass dream recently. I could vividly see John Lennon singing, but he was singing GunsNRoses' "Rocket Queen" and I heard it in Lennons voice. Weird.
koiulpoi	Date: April 30, 2005 @ 10:08 AM And, it wasn't a dream, but that's happened again to me recently. Running Until Daybreak. It's weird - music just comes to me.
kingo	Date: April 30, 2005 @ 11:45 AM Music has never come anywhere even CLOSE to me. Everytime it's within a radius of about 20 yards of me I try to catch it with a fishing line, but I'm not a very good shot. Recently in fact music took out a restraining order against me. So I'm not even legally allowed to be near it. It sure as shit never just comes to me. Lucky bastard.

DaveWL	Date: May 9, 2005 @ 6:33 AM Paul McCartney claims the tune for Yesterday came to him in a dream. Another legend goes that Keith Richard was jamming into a tape machine when he fell asleep ( or passed out in a drug induced state- you decide). When he awoke and replayed the tape he found the guitar riff for satisfaction recorded but couldn’t remember playing it. I’v never been so lucky to dream an original tune just wake up with some really irritating current tune stuck in my head that I can’t shake off.
evansorchid	Date: May 9, 2005 @ 7:28 AM I've only been successful twice in sitting down immediately after I wake up and attempting to translate a brand new song in my dream to reality. Usually the music gets lost and forgotten within one to two minutes. Sometimes, I have resolved problems with chord change modulations or smoothed out tempo irregularities. Or sometimes, I've attempted to write it down, but when I come back to it, it doesn't make any sense to me.
