Any Prog-Rock Fans Here?

zedsalt	Date: May 30, 2005 @ 12:13 PM I'm a HUGE Prog fan, but in the spirit of honesty and fairness, I should point out that my own work doesn't always reflect that. Like any genre that has heavily influenced me, I tend to "play with it" rather than "play it". One album EVERY Prog fan should own is "Succour" (various artists). If you don't have it, Owl, find it, buy it, immerse yourself in it!
Intergalacti...	Date: May 30, 2005 @ 1:34 PM I suggest every prog rock band should own Scenes from a memory by Dream Theater, although a very commercial album it doesnt take away any of its brilliance.
theblacklodge	Date: May 30, 2005 @ 2:23 PM I've always been fascinated by the pre-1975 Genesis and Yes and parts of Crimson, because for me the songwriting stands out as, not just "symphonic" but also interestingly "polyphonic" with all these "voices" intermingling. And Yes uses a lot of exciting structure during the first half of the 70's that I have tried a lot, more or less consciously it seems, to derive from myself. That's what I sometimes miss with the modern progmetal of Dreamtheater or the likes of them.

TheOwl	Date: May 30, 2005 @ 10:36 PM Hey Black Lodge!! The pre-'75 Genesis stuff was classic to say the least! They're ALL good from that period! The "Archives I" box set is a must have too, includes a killer live version of "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway!"

jeddak	Date: June 6, 2005 @ 7:38 AM I have to echo zedsalt - I listen to lots of prog and fusion, but my own music is much simpler. I wish I could compose (and play!) the kind of music I prefer to listen to. Gentle Giant's albums _Free Hand_, _In A Glass House_, and _The Power and the Glory_ are real favorites of mine. Any fan of '70's prog who has not been exposed to this band has GOT to check them out. They were phenomenal. Incredible musicians.
kingo	Date: June 6, 2005 @ 8:01 AM Big fan of prog, early Genesis and King Crimson and Tull and Yes; as well as Henry Cow and the Art Bears and the like. Later stuff from Marillion to Queensryche to Dream Theater. Stir that all together and mix it all up and whatever you've got would sound nothing at all like Habibi Telephone, but the influence is definitely there, cowering in the corner.
EvilPicnic	Date: June 6, 2005 @ 11:21 AM Although too young to remember first hand (I'm 16) I like what prog I've heard (which isn't actually much)... King Crimson are great, despite being one of Tony Blair's favourite bands, Fripp really does it for me as a forward thinking guitarist, he's a genious of timing displacement. That's about it though, I come at things from a jazzy angle, having been delving into fusion for a few years now, McLaughlin, Pastorius, FZ etc; and I've been digging the more ambitious modern rock and metal stuff too, Muse, The Mars Volta, SOAD, Sikth. 70's prog hasn't really been on my list of priorities... I haven't heard any Genesis, but I've been put off by my Dad's love of Phil Collins ('Dance into the light! da da da da da dah de dah...' mental scarring), and all I've heard of Yes is Steve Howe's bit on Queens Innuendo. Seeing the album Yessongs sort of put me off though. It's a pretty crappy title, isn't it? Yessongs. Hmmmmm. Right.
zedsalt	Date: June 6, 2005 @ 12:15 PM Ooh, see, the best Genesis material was with Peter Gabriel as the frontman, NOT Phil the Pill! Back when PG used to keep a wardrobe box onstage for frequent costume changes, THAT was Genesis!
fanch-t	Date: June 6, 2005 @ 3:31 PM old genesis is where it's at, selling england by the pound is one of my favorite albums of all time. I also think Can's Tago Mago is great as far as totally crazy things go.
kingo	Date: June 10, 2005 @ 1:48 PM Hey Zed -- nice recommendation on the "Succour" CD. Just got it in the mail yesterday and I'm diggin' it a lot.
