Classiing Black Sabbath

bmccosar	Date: February 27, 2007 @ 9:49 PM Hmm, that's a toughie. I think the problem is trying to apply hierarchical classification to what is essentially a weblike structure. That is, instead of fitting into distinct categories, I'm beginning to believe music fits together sort of like a spider's web. If we take blues as the central point in the web, we get to early rock and roll (one jump); from here we get to the harder rock of the '60s (two jumps); from here to the even harder, pioneering sound of vintage Sabbath (third jump). Now, taking this as a new nexus, we find Dark Rock is, in my estimation, only two jumps away, and definitely touches at least metal. On the other hand, classic rock touches both '60s rock and metal, so two jumps there also. Arrgh, too much coffee again.

Kalos	Date: February 28, 2007 @ 2:59 PM If by class, you mean genre, then I have always placed Sabbath in the Rock section. However, they are the true originators of what is called Doom Metal. Of course Doom Metal, and it's lighter cousin Stoner Rock, are two living genres that thrive to this day. My only question here is: Dark Rock?
