Funkify Me.

bmccosar	Date: October 15, 2007 @ 7:55 AM OK, here goes: the first attempt. I'd like to set up an old school funk band. Well, at least a collab that sounds similar. I had a lot of fun over the weekend jamming out with some vintage George Clinton type stuff. Skills I have: Funk guitar scratchin. Slap bass (or plain thump bass). Skills needed for this to succeed: Someone who's MUCH better at rhythm programming. I funk band has far too many percussive bits to work using the minimal set I have. Someone who can do mad sampling, bizarre 70s textures, and synth / key parts. Hey, someone who can vocally improv, and maybe some backup vocalists. Horn section. Probably digital, but blasting along like a unified wall of sound. We can start with one short proof-of-concept demo, then expand it to a real tune. I'd suggest a 90 second demo, then work out the full arrangement later. Others -- post your ideas as well. (Create your own thread, though). If this one comes together, fine. If it fails, there will be other threads, and maybe something will gel.
bmccosar	Date: October 15, 2007 @ 8:31 PM I asked a lot of you, privately, to present your own ideas. Use the post above as a sort of model. I've said it before, but Be Bold. Try something that will excite you, inspire others, and provide a challenge.
AdNauseam	Date: October 15, 2007 @ 8:47 PM I'm steadily progressing on my own trumpet, so I may be able to work on some horn arrangements (study some ToP or Earth Wind & Fire )
AdNauseam	Date: October 15, 2007 @ 8:50 PM Addendum, though: I'm not entirely sure if I can do anything that would take up too much of my time due to school and stuff, so anything I do is probably not going to be consistent time-wise.

We're going to do this stuff live anyways.. just thought I'd pipe in.. -Stan
bmccosar	Date: October 15, 2007 @ 10:09 PM Hey, that would be great, both of you. Horns are one of the hardest things to come by. AdNauseum, I don't think this would be a gigantic effort at first. It'd be playing with the sound until we got something we really liked. Very small bits, first. Later, the big enchilada. SaxSinger -- great, plus I know you have an ear for arrangement. If you're doing old school funk, this would be a great fit for a sideline effort. Plus, you might even learn a thing or two.

bmccosar	Date: October 16, 2007 @ 2:58 PM Sax has pitched me some good ideas behind the scenes -- it looks like we may be starting with some drum tracks, and I can funkify them with some bass. After that, we'll need the words, harmony, and textures. ON THE OTHER HAND, no one said we had to start at one end only. Baiko, if you have any ideas for lyrics or melody, let us know. Funk tunes tended to be memorable -- not many words, but words that get stuck in your head.
bmccosar	Date: October 19, 2007 @ 10:55 PM Sax has sent me a drum track, and I came up with two different bass ideas. Have a listen and offer your sage advice.
