Tell me when you sample.

Cryxan	Date: January 17, 2004 @ 10:46 PM I've come across songs here that I liked, and let the artist know that. But in a couple cases, I later learned that there was sampling involved, and that in fact, the melody that I so liked and complimented the artist for wasn't even original. It was a letdown, and I felt sort of foolish for making my comment. I'm not saying don't sample, just let your listeners know when you do. Anyone else feel like this?
Thaspian	Date: January 17, 2004 @ 11:13 PM That pisses me off. Like, when I _really_ liked the drumwork in some videogame soundtrack song, for a boss battle, a lot, and I found out it was actually a fucking keyboard preset. Letdown.
Apertome	Date: January 17, 2004 @ 11:22 PM The problem is, if an artist admits to having sampled something, and doesn't have the rights to do so, one of the admins may well delete the track. But you're right, it's irritating. I lose a lot of respect for the "artist" in situations such as the one you describe.
sinai	Date: January 18, 2004 @ 1:31 AM i sample alot...make that ALOT, in fact i set out to do that, to build songs around samples... however, most of them are speech, in fact, all of them are, except abit of crossbreed in "Icarus" (good band too, check em out) i'm saving the entire list of samples i used for when i'm ready to put the entire albumn up on here, juss seems easier (and more fair to the people, animals, and natural effects that i sampled to do it that way) in the mean time, as it has happened, if someone asks the origin of any sounds in my work, i gladly give it up (you can see for yourself on that one, i believe it's in the comments for "flight of the phoenix" that i clued someone in on a morgan lander sample i used and juss on the off chance your referring to me cryxan, i apologize for not being forthcoming

And actually, you're alright because I've heard you talk about sampling and it even says that in your bio, so I have no problems there. The ones that bug me are the ones who never admit to sampling. One can argue that they never said that their music is completely original, but I tend to take it in good faith that it is, and not sharing important background info is a little deceiving.

SpicoliInc	Date: January 19, 2004 @ 12:20 AM I sample...My main instruments are turntables. But I also don't like to keep it exactly the same as the original. I'll effects, change pitch/tempo, etc, and it usually doesn't sound like anything like what I started out with. Is that worse? Or after you mess with it so much and make something 'new', can you ever call it your own because it started as a sample? I am 100% all for giving credit where credit is due.
Jesuszilla	Date: January 19, 2004 @ 6:51 PM That's the main thing I've never liked about most dance music, I don't know if they've just stolen something and put a crappy handclap beat over the top or whether it's original. Bom Clap Bom Clap Bom Clap Bom Clap Bom Ti Clap Ti Bom Ti Clap Ti Bom Ti Clap Ti Bom Ti Clap Ti. Well, at least that applies to all the rubbish dance music that spammed the official UK charts not that long ago! Or, even worse, if they've used any Dance Ejay type program!
leerees	Date: January 19, 2004 @ 11:15 PM I make dance music but i never sample anything except obviously the vocals. everything i make is hand played including the drums, however i usually quantize the drums and sometimes the bassline afterwards. I think its wrong to sample other peoples music.
Autophage	Date: January 19, 2004 @ 11:26 PM I sample static and speech from the radio, but never anything musical. Much of my work isn't melodic anyway, so it wouldn't make sense to sample anything that was unless I was mangling it up so bad it's unrecognizable - and if I'm doing that, I might as well work with more entertaining start material, like speech or static, or a pure sine wave.
Veracohr	Date: January 19, 2004 @ 11:35 PM Sometimes I want to sample a kick drum from a song, because I'm never happy with my kick drums, but they're almost always in the middle of a song, so I'd have all sorts of synths and what not over the kick drum sample.
encore123	Date: January 20, 2004 @ 3:38 PM if your talking about hip hop artists, understand that 90% of hip hop involves samples. the reason being is hip hop is not so much about inventing melody as it is controlling it. to mix different peoples songs and turn them into hip hop is not easy. then to rap to it is a whole other area. i rap and produce and i am one of few that actually do both. most people think sampling is easy or that it makes the song not original, but if i were to break it down, or hand someone the samples they wouldnt know a thing about chopping it up or making it sound good and professional.
lordDeaconGreen	Date: January 20, 2004 @ 3:49 PM Samples been done since the craetion of Music... It aint nothing new. Bethoven sample Mozart or would have if He did come from the same time period. Look at al those those compose... They sample others music and create complete songs from others. Music is a plagerizes heaven but Music is like math and science... IT has to be built upon to becaome perfected.
johnnygnote	Date: January 21, 2004 @ 4:29 AM Wait wait wait, Beehtoven did not sample Mozart, and would not have because he was a real bastard about originality. It has already been in ancient times before us. There is no remembrance of former things, Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come By those who will come after" (Ecclesiastes 1-11). Although this statement by King Solomon is quite true, I beg to differ on your comment about sampling LDG, Musicians have spent more time over the centuries to be original and not to "copy" "sample" or to "plagerize". Althougg I have no problem with sampling, and I find some of it to be creative. I do have a hard time with someone trying to reationalize it with diatribes and half truths. As a musician, I do take offense to the comment "Music is a plagerizes heaven"(sic) Perhaps it may be true for people who lack the creativity to create from the heart and to find an original place to come from. I can admit that I myself have been influenced by other musicians but... I as well as many other musicians strive to find that place in their music that is ours alone and no one else's.
