ASCAP Memberships

I assume there are numerous independent
writers/artists in this forum. Need a little
education on this subject so let me present a
scenario:
You can join ASCAP, either as a writer or
publisher. So……
I write, record, and distribute my music via the
Internet. So first of all being a “writer” allows
me to be able to join ASCAP. Right?
Since I produce and distribute my material via
the Internet, I am then my own publisher. Right?
So consequently, I could also join ASCAP either
as a “publisher” or a “writer”. Right?
Is there a preference as to which choice one
would make with regard to the type of membership?
Is this an organization that an independent
artist might not want to join?
Talk to me……….

I actually have the very same question. I printed
out the form and I have no idea what I "qualify"
for.

BMI's servicer agreement is a bit easier to
decipher and is also free. But regardless, being
a writer allows you to join ASCAP though it has a
bit of a catch 22 in that you should have some of
your pieces in works to a publishing deal as
well. BMI, ASCAP and SECAC (to a lesser extent)
will collect royalties for you if you have your
music transmitted through the airwaves, sold as
sheet music, and electronically (again to a
lesser extent). None of the businesses will
really report or help you sell more of what you
do though.
