How does selling a song to a record label effect the artist?

I've often wondered what happens to the artists
rights when a song is sold and what does he get
for it. I'm sure that somone on this forum has
sold a song - right?
Let's say that Nashville, Motown (or somebody)
likes your song and "buys it from you". What are
they buying? Are you selling the copyright to
that song? What are you giving up? Do you get
royalties when it's recorded by another artist?
How much would a song sell for ($10, $100, $1000,
$10000)? How does all that stuff work?

If you sell the copyright you don't get shit
after the initial selling cost. The copyright
holder gets the royalties.
Or it's possible that everything I just said came
directly out of my ass.

I'm sure that every situation is different and
most artists would opt to keep ownership. That's
why I was asking. What's the "average" deal like?

in a band making songs... they made a song and
soem record company or something (idk the exact
details) said it was catchy and could sell... my

said they didn't want to "sell themselves out"
and stuff... they all lived with their parents
