What qualifications does a music manager need?

Have an idea whats going on in the industry Have industry contacts Be trustworthy, and capable of making decisions on behalf of the artist/band Obtain WHATEVER the band requires in a town miles away from home *Be able to motivate the group

pog	Date: October 19, 2003 @ 9:31 PM A manager could be anyone, as long as they can do all the stuff listed above. You could try a booking agency, and ask if they know of any managers that are looking for bands. Another way is to find a local band and approach their manager... they may be too busy to take on another band, but they may know another manager that that is available. Most places have a manager that is the elite... as in they own all the local talent, and they always land the higher paying support acts. Mixing with these circles of people is a really good way to find out who's who in the local industry, as well as boosting your band's image. It's basic networking, but an essential skill. furiousBall	Date: October 19, 2003 @ 9:36 PM i 100% agree with robin's comment, especially if any money changes hand up front - they HAVE to have a track record and i would strongly encourage you to work on a percentage basis (they don't get paid, until you get paid). as far as finding someone, talk to other bands, anyone in the industry that you know, etc. bona fide entertainment attorneys can also be an excellent source of information (and usually kinda price too)
robin101	Date: October 19, 2003 @ 9:37 PM You can start with the paperback: "SONGWRITER'S Market" (2004 edition, Writer's Digest Books). This book includes "Managers & Booking Agents" (among other things as: music publishers, record companies ect...). You can get it at any major bookstore. It will list names, addresses, phone numbers and what type of music they represent. It may not be the "end-all", however, there is a wealth of information within these pages.
GeneHilbert	Date: October 19, 2003 @ 11:27 PM vandaman & pog have hit the nail on the head. The only thing I can add is the ability to sell. Nothing is bigger asset than having someone in your corner with sales experience. Excellent people skills and the ability to close the deal.
