What are demo tapes for?

pacificYO	Date: October 25, 2003 @ 2:26 PM ...the only thing i know about the music industry is the marketing and how the business stuff is worked out.. ..but what are "demo tapes" for? ..on tv shows and stuff i see alot of people save up money for a recording session to make a demo tape, or try to slip one of their tapes to a pop star..

Veracohr	Date: October 25, 2003 @ 6:31 PM They are for the label to hear, in the hopes of getting a "deal". They are really only useful for people who want to be on a label.
robin101	Date: October 25, 2003 @ 7:11 PM That is correct Ronnie and Verachor, but your right pacific YO, as far as a finished recording goes - the demos are not used. The songs are re-recorded with a record producer at the helm. There is one case (which I know if), where the demos became the "master". In regard to "Hall & Oates" - I once asked John (Oates) why they used a drum machine on the song: "Kiss On My List". He told me that they tried real drummers after transferring the 8 track demo to 24 trk., but no one captured the original feel of the demo. So - they kept the drum machine tracks. By the way, I love this internet. I can open my mouth here and I dare anyone to sue me for libel or slander (since anything I say is indeed truthful). Rick Iantosca (Robin101)
ashleighj	Date: October 25, 2003 @ 7:40 PM by the way, i'm constantly amused at how liars just can't keep quiet about it when their credibility is challenged. pacific, "demo tape" doesn't necessarily mean an analogue tape these days. it's just the term held-over from before CDs were in common use and cassettes were the norm. most people just call them "demos" now, regardless of the media it's on. (CD, DAT, cassette, MP3, you name it.)

Ronnie sums it up best. And ash is correct in the sense that demo tape is the same thing as demo CD just no one cares to call it that.. Rick is also correct in that they aren't used for final masters, not typically. demo tape means DEMO period. I have tons of demos but nothing I have pushed to a label, but it's still a demo
woodhead	Date: October 25, 2003 @ 9:18 PM Demos are mostly used to get work in clubs not in your area, and usually Accompnay a promro pack, you now demo, pic, bio, news clippings, how to contact the band so forth and so forth.
ronnie71	Date: October 25, 2003 @ 11:20 PM woody we got a winner.. thats waht i used our demo for plus its to test the waters with people they are cheaper so you can give them away... to warm people up to your style.. so when you do record full length album or EP then you know where and when to go.. what market is accepting your material better.

CountryMusikMan	Date: October 28, 2003 @ 7:52 PM Demo Tapes are Your Personal Calling Cards. Like a Business Card. Without it You are nothing to the industry. Demos are a first impression of your talent.
