A must-have instrumental and vocal album from a unique new artist and guitar virtuoso

August 18, 2003 @ 2:09 PM
John P. Kline, Ph.D.
About the Album:
Begin with life's dance... a meditative acoustic duo combining elements of Celtic, Folk, and Classical music... Then comes Florida Highlands, which combines elements of Celtic and ambient New-Age music with...Shred Metal? Continue the journey with "Paradoxical Sleep," which may remind you of the day that Allan Holdsworth met Steve Vai at Pat Metheny's house, and the ambient yet fiery "Hello it's Me," reminiscent of Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson, and you begin to think that you get the idea about the diversity of this album.
But then come the blues / rock / country influences in "One in Front," and the gratuitously fun flurries of speed and style in the Shred Metal song "Copper Goblins," and you may start to think that you have John pegged as a shredder... But then he starts singing...Raw and soulful vocals: First on an acoustic rendition of blues-rock song, "The Loser," then on the Adult Contemporary meets Country ballad, "In my Eyes."
After a brief intermission from the singing with the Matheny-esque instrumental "Mellow, Eh," come "Angry Man" and "Going Away," vocal ballads reminiscent of "Elton John" and "Billy Joel." "Borderline" may remind you of Supertramp, Billy Joel, and perhaps even some newer Rod Stewart, and "Life's Dance Reprise" finishes the 14-song, one-man masterpiece almost as it began... only this time it is fully orchestrated with electric guitars, bass, and guitar synthesizers for textures and percussion sounds... ala Steve Morse...
About the Artist:
Dr. John Kline has worn the many hats of scientist, statistician, computer technician, therapist, professor, composer, recording engineer, writer, songwriter, and guitar virtuoso. What does John have to say about this?; "I feel like Buckaroo Banzai."
Born in Helena Montana, his precocious interest in music propelled him to begin playing the guitar at the age of 10, professionally at the age of 15. He traveled with several bands during and after high school, as well as before, during, and after college at Carroll College of Montana, where he graduated with a B.A. in psychology.
John spent a one-year stint at a state college in Billings as a music major, where he studied classical guitar, piano, composition, and voice. "My teachers were sometimes frustrated with me because breaking the arbitrary rules of style sounded better to me." John released his first solo instrumental cassette with the tongue-in-cheek title, "Elevator Music" shortly after his graduation from Carroll.
John's diverse and inspiring music traverses styles from instrumental rock, to cool and hot jazz fusion, country, shred metal, rock, funk, celtic, classical, and soulful vocal ballads. "My favorite players have always been eclectic and creative ones that play around in and combine the best of all genres." Because of John's versatility as session player and side man, John has been described as a sort of musical "chameleon." John says he's "more like a chameleon on paisley."
"My life has been like a ping pong ball in the wind," says John. The saying came from a professor at the University of Arizona, where John earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. His research on the neural underpinnings of defense mechanisms and other unconscious mental processes, anxiety, and depression, has resulted in close to 30 scholarly publications, and has gained him international notoriety as an expert in the neural underpinnings of emotion and its regulation.
Upon receiving a M.A. in experimental psychology from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, John undertook studies for his
Ph.D.in
Tucson. The rigors of graduate school and his subsequent professional life led John to move about the country as an academic gypsy, i.e. postdoctoral research fellow, and assistant professor of psychology. He has lived at the four corners of the continental U.S., as well as in the heartland.
The diversity of the experiences that he has had during his travels is reflected in his music. Check out Flipside... You won't be sorry.
