MBox features vs Digi 001???

Someone tell me why I shouldn't get a Digi 001 w/ 8 inputs for about $500 off Ebay as opposed to about $400 Mbox which only has 2 inputs. What's the deal? Why would anyone NOT pay a little more for the Digi 001? What makes the Mbox better than the digi001? I notice that Digidesign doesn't produce them anymore...at first I thought this means they wouldn't add plugins to it anymore but then I remembered...wait...plugins are all about the Protools program itself not the hardware. As far as I know v6.4 works just fine w/ the Digi 001. Are the 2 Focusrite preamps of the Mbox a hell of a lot better? I'm looking to buy either of one of them...and I don't care about portability. Which one would YOU go for and why?
DevonPowell	Date: June 28, 2004 @ 7:09 PM If you NEED 8 inputs, then the m-box isn't for you. The m-box is designed for those musicians who only need to work with 2 tracks at a time (vocals/guitar, for example). Those bands that need more tracks for other instruments (ie: drums), wouldn't do well with an m-box. I wouldn't buy a digi 001 b/c it's more than I need. The focusrite preamps are very nice, certainly. Ask yourself this: How many tracks do I need at most? Will I ever want MORE than that? If you need 2 and no more than that, don't spend the xtra money on the digi 001. The m-box will work well.
smartazz	Date: June 29, 2004 @ 12:32 PM the 001 is way more versitile then the mbox aside from the inputs the pci connection rather then usb greatly and i mean greatly reduces latencey problems... basically they stopped making the 001 when they came out with the 002 rack version, evrything went firewire. I did buy the 001 off Ebay for $500 I upgraded from the mbox that i bought new a few years ago it's a much better sytem... and for the money it was a no brainer. the only prolbem with getting an 001 is that because it is discontinued it WILL eventually stop being supported so far it hasn't happened I recentely upgraded to 6.4 with no problems. btw. the 001 also has 2 of the focusrite preamps and 6 line level inputs.
Wolfman140	Date: June 29, 2004 @ 7:34 PM Thanks a lot smartazz, about the latency problem thing and everything. Yeah I didn't know how fast a USB could possibly be compared to the PCI. So thats cool...yeah they're cheap enough of Ebay and I plan on using my PC for a good long while...so..the 001 shall work for my PC just fine. I figure when I have that massive amount of money to get a G5 or better, I'll enough have enough to get something better than the 001 anyway. Thanks for your input brother! -Kevin
