making an audio CD

Matthew	Date: May 15, 2007 @ 1:04 PM Hi there! This sounds like a tupid question, but how do I do it? Before I have always just copied the songs onto a cd and it's been fine for normal hi-fi playback - but for some reason my audio cd's just won't work on my stereo? I've tried a couple of different formats, namely WAV and Windows PCM (I think) but I dunno which is correct
MickeyBreezy	Date: May 16, 2007 @ 1:02 AM depending on your stereo, it might not be compatible w/ burned cd's. typically anything newer than, uhhh, quite awhile ago, will play the copied discs. check your settings in your media player as well, under "tools" go to "options", click the "file types" tab, and make sure you have all of the boxes checked for all the different types. (this is all assuming you're using windows media player) if you are not using WMP, then make sure what ever your are doing is burning them as audio, and not data (stupid i know, but it could happen) ...if you have a newer cd player, and all settings are in order, look at the discs after burning, you should be able to see the line (faintly) where it copied the info, if you dont see it, its possible that your burner may not be working correctly. hope that helps

I've noticed that the CDs I've been burning will work in my car, in my computer, in my 10 year old CD player, and in this jam-box just fine. But the same CD won't work in the new CD player at my girlfriend's house or in a CD-DVD player. I also have learned that a Rewritable CD won't work in any of these devices.

pog	Date: May 16, 2007 @ 11:34 AM what program are you burning with ? it actually needs to be formatted in a way that cd players can use. Simply burning a data cd of wav files won't do it.
Matthew	Date: May 16, 2007 @ 1:19 PM Thanks for the feedback! I've tried using iTunes to burnt eh disc, which has worked for me before...for some reason now it's not working. I am using re-writable cd's which could be the reason!!! But I haven't any normal cd's to test the theory out with The cd player I'm trying them out on has always worked in the past, and the burner is writing the files to the disk, it's just that they aren't playing. By the way I'm not trying to pirate anyone's work, just writing my own tracks to a cd for my mum's birthday!

ShadowMom	Date: May 16, 2007 @ 1:33 PM Yes, it does. I tried those cds, too, and had the same problem a long time ago, so I never did it again. For music, the plain cd would probably clear it up for you.

LegoBreaks	Date: May 16, 2007 @ 6:19 PM Nero, is good for burning CD's. I get all my tunes in uncompressed 44000 stereo wave format. then burn them on with nero at a slow burning rate. This gives me problems. Stay away from itunes and windows media formats then then you don't get any crappy drm crap encoded in.

mattbanx	Date: May 17, 2007 @ 1:52 AM I have used Nero for burning cd's. I also found that Roxio is good. My particuliar Roxio burner is called Easy CD Creator. I get data cd-rw discs. I never had a problem playing them in any cd player I have used. They come in bulk on a spool and you can pick them up in a department store. The advantage with the Roxio, is it gives the option with a data cd if you want to either finalize a cd or not finalize and add tracks later. And there's not as many bugs.
mattbanx	Date: May 17, 2007 @ 2:07 AM I have to make a correction. I meant a cd-r disk. A cd-rw disc is the type you copy over. I'm still calling the damn things a cd-rw. At one time cd-rw was the only type I could find for storing my .wav files. And then there were just the cd's for music. But I thought it was important I corrected that.

Date: May 17, 2007 @ 7:11 AM For maximum compatibility use good quality CD-R's (such as the ones Maxell make that are designed just for audio), burn your CDs at a slower rate for fewer errors (x4 speed is a good speed to burn at, burning x1 or real time is not recommended unless you have an unbelieveably powerful machine, faster than x4 introduces more errors) and if possible (hard these days) try and use 650 MB CD roms - the 800 mb cd roms have been around a few years but many older CD players cannot play anything but 650 MB CD Roms. Your burning software has very little to do with it, but a program such as CD Architect which comes bundled with SOundforge or available stand alone is better than Roxio / Sonic Now etc as it is designed to be red book compliant unless you change things manually (it also allows full PQ documentation for mastering, cross fades, elimination of the 2 second gap, 20 different fx, embedding cd text, etc, etc_. Although Roxio/Nero etc are fine for everyday demo and/or audio compilations etc. CD-R for data are mostly fine too, but can be more error prone. CD-RW is only supported in a limited number of CD drives and therefore may not be the best option, although they are good for data backup.
