When is Bass overkill?

ray104	Date: January 28, 2008 @ 2:46 PM When your dong a song like a hiphop or Pop/hiphop combination where lots od deep synth bass is neccesary, During mixing what should you not attempt to do bass wise?

zedsalt	Date: January 28, 2008 @ 10:48 PM I think the most effective way to make decisions like this is to try to please yourself. Listen to your different mixes through as wide of a range of players as you have access to, and go with what sounds best to you. Giving too much thought to others' opinions in a creative endeavor is almost inevitably self-defeating. Trust your ear.
leedsquietman	Date: January 29, 2008 @ 12:06 AM I like pretty compressed bass sounds but you can over do it. Hip Hop usually requires phat synth bass, choose an appropriate sound and make it fits the kick drum well. Sidechaining can help. As can eliminating bass frequencies on other non bass instruments or you'll have too much muddiness. High pass filter is your friend.

Thaspian	Date: February 2, 2008 @ 7:57 PM Don't do what doesn't sound good. Do what does sound good. Make stuff sound good and people will listen. It's fun to play with this stuff. But remember if it doesn't sound good, you'll have less chances to play again.
