When reporting bugs via the help desk
Distilled1

just something that I think will help Jack and
the rest.
Useful bug reports are ones that get bugs fixed.
A useful bug report normally has two qualities:
1.
Reproducible. If an coder can't see it or
conclusively prove that it exists, the coder will
probably mark it as resolved, or not
reproducible, and move on to the next bug. Every
detail you can provide helps.
2.
Specific. The quicker the coder can isolate
the issue to a specific problem, the more likely
it'll be expediently fixed. (If a programmer or
tester has to decipher a bug, they spend more
time cursing the submitter than fixing or testing
the problem.)
Let's say that you receive a mp3 file not
supported notice at upload. And want to write up
a bug report:
BAD:
"My mp3 is uploading but it’s saying
it’s not supported. My computer uses Windows. I
think that this is a really bad problem and you
should fix it now. By the way, your icons really
suck. Nobody will use dmusic.com if you keep
those ugly icons. Oh, and my grandmother's home
page doesn't look right, either, it's all messed
up. Good luck."
GOOD:
"I receive a “file not supported”
notice each time when I Upload my mp3s, using the
10.28.99 build on a Win NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5)
system. I also rebooted into Linux, and
reproduced this problem using the 10.28.99 Linux
build. The page that opens shows me in red only
mp3 ….etc… on the top of the page in my
browser I see in white letters mime
type/oct.stream (or what you see)
Platform:
On which hardware platform did you find
this bug? (e.g. Macintosh,PC,Comadore 64, cell
phone .)
Otherwise, select the platform(s) that you found
the bug on.
OS:
On which Operating System (OS) did you find
this bug? (e.g. Linux, Windows NT, Mac OS 8.5.,
XP, Vista, OS X)
How important is the bug?
Severity:
How damaging is the bug?
is this a
showstopper
(mp3 upload would be as
well as stream not working.) Or is it something
that is just there (an SQL error on opening file
manager, but file manager works as it should.) or
an intermediate issue, (a link not working from
certain pages only)
What else can you tell the coder about the bug?
URL:
On what URL did you discover this bug?
If you encountered the bug on a particular URL,
please provide it (or, them) here. i.e. (
http://files.dmusic.com/file_manager/index.php?sec
=default&subsec=stats&fileid=170695)
causes 11
sql errors from this url(
http://files.dmusic.com/file_manager/)
Summary:
How would you describe the bug, in
approximately 60 or fewer characters?
A good summary should quickly and uniquely
identify a bug report. Otherwise, developers
cannot meaningfully query by bug summary, and
will often fail to pay attention to your bug
report when reviewing a 10 page bug list.
A summary of:"
http://files.dmusic.com/file_manager/,
causes sql
errors, on XP SP2, Mozilla/5.0 Firefox/2.0.0.12"
is a useful title.
"This Sucks!" or "upload problem" would be
examples of a bad title.
Description:
What else can you tell the coder
about this bug?
Please provide as detailed of a problem diagnosis
in this field as possible.
Steps to Reproduce:
The minimal set of steps
necessary to trigger the bug. Include any special
setup steps.
1) View any web page. (I used the home page,
http://dmusic.com)
2) click on music tab. (page goes back to the
main home page dmusic.com.)
Actual Results: What the application did after
performing the above steps.
Stays on
http://dmusic.com
Expected Results: What the application should
have done, were the bug not present.
The window should open at
http://music.dmusic.com/)
Build Date & Platform: Date and platform of the
build that you first encountered the bug in.
11/25/04 build on Mac OS (Checked Viewer &
Apprunner)
Additional Builds and Platforms: Whether or not
the bug takes place on other platforms or
browsers.
- Occurs On
IE6 (12/08/06 build on Windows NT 4.0)
- Doesn't Occur On
Mozilla/5.0 Firefox/2.0.0.12 (2/12/08
build on Red Hat Linux)
Internet Explorer 7.0 (RTM build on
Windows XP home SP2)
Additional Information:
Any other debugging
information.
• Any and all error outputs
•
Screen shots are a huge plus!
• Repro steps - be very specific; your bug may
be affected by where you're on dmusic(user page?
main page? Edit page?), whose user account you're
using
and what were you doing.
