Music - for the artist; not the people

mocarlton	Date: December 31, 2006 @ 6:52 PM I was inspired to write this blog entry by one of my "buyers". This person started to shit on my music; the lyrical construction, the beat, the content. When they noticed i was on the verge of blowing up in their face they said "you should be happy i bought your album". What is that? Really, i mean how can you say that what i did was crap... i put my heart into the music... maybe if i had made the music FOR that person than maybe they could say it was crap, but really, that music is me, not a part of me, but it is me. That person didnt understand it was like a punch to the face while my hands were tied behind my back. Every song I put out I love. True there may be mistakes, but i do love the song or i would not have put it out would i? This event brought me to an even more frustrating topic. Hip Hop. The biggest ass of a donkey i ever seen. They hypocritical leper that puts on a suit to puff up its ego. They "rap" about their hoes, their cars, their bling, but THAT AINT YOU... fo real.. i mean well if that is what someone thinks their life is then im sorry for shittin' on you cuz that would make a hypocite. Now if they are rappin bout this stuff and dont believe it, that means they are making songs for their audience, right? And what if the audience doesn't care? Well American hip hop has become a hole in the ground. We are having many problems crawling out of it. The song is not classified on how good it is by the lyrical content, complexity of flow, lyrical construction , BUT a beat... a BEAT ... thats it... so you know if its got a catchy beat, make me wanna sway in my seat then its gotta be a good song... screw that. The reason most rappers do have longevity is because of their disbelief in their own creation. The second I start making music for my listener then I shall be cast into the fiery pit of hell with no parole. I want to be "big"... ya know heard internationally.. but what i would want over that is longevity... to WANT to continue with my music even if i aint "big" because as long as your making music that is true to yourself there will be listeners. The listener may not entirely agree, but they will respect you for your beliefs. Now i was thinking i censor myself too much... I do not say what I think , because i want people to hear it.. Not saying that what i wanna say is that i love ma bitches and i fucked a couple of em, and lets smoke a bowl.. no not at all, but the way i wanna say it i do not because of fear of the listener... mostly fear of the back of my mothers hand... haha.. im playin, but ya know well thats what i want to say ... music should be made for the artist not the listener -Mo Carlton
bmccosar	Date: December 31, 2006 @ 8:21 PM Certainly I perform my music because I love it; but I don't think being blind to the HONEST needs of the audience serves anyone. The person you were talking to was not really interested in your work, but in taking you down. Don't take them as representative of public opinion or the public in general. I compare it to writing. Maybe Stephen King likes to write stories about childhood friends who, while growing up, have to confront a great evil. Nevertheless, he varies his books so that this is not the subject of every novel. An artist can't ignore the audience. Plus, not all hiphop is about portraying an image; there are tunes that are well crafted and complex. Tallisman's work comes to mind. Back in the day, my old jazz band, Rhythm Method, was performing at the Shamrock (Gainesville, FL). We opened with a swingin jazz number--I think something like "Don't get around much anymore." The patrons at the bar weren't buying it; they were sitting there chatting. I cranked up the volume and dropped in a little guitar distortion on the next tune--"Watermelon Man"--and the joint came alive. The band had caught their attention. People literally left their drinks at the bar and rushed over to see what the heck was going on. My point is, we could have ignored them, or even despised them--"Pfah, who are they, they don't understand the magic of the Dm7b5-G7alt-Cmaj13 progression!" But that wasn't us. We wanted the joing rockin like in the old days, when jazz wasn't confined to black ties and Lincoln Center and geriatric wards. Oop--rant over, I've got to get to a party. Chuck Norris once shot down a German fighter plane with his finger, by yelling, "Bang!"

(as in your whole music career.. not while performin.. you know what i mean) any ways yes tallis is it i know him personally... good man good music mo maybe check out my stuff

Maybe because I'm always sort of surprised that there's a next day [I will check out your tracks, certainly. This is the week I go back to work, so I need tuneage for the car. I've been burning compilation CDs most of the day.]
zedsalt	Date: January 2, 2007 @ 9:09 AM Back in my college days, I often found myself walking home sloppy drunk. I would be doing fine, or at least would think so, until I saw a police officer. Then I would really concentrate on appearing sober. The harder I tried, the more obviously drunk I looked. The same thing happens any time I give a moment's concern to how anybody else is going to feel about a song I'm working on- it's crippling. Turns me into a fumbling, stumbling, stuttering mess. If someone is enough of a jerk to give you such a negative unsolicited opinion, how concerned should you be with it, really? You know it doesn't mean that you did an especially bad job of putting together an album; he just did an especially bad job of choosing one he'd enjoy.

That's true. It's why, most of the time, if music doesn't really sit well with me, I'll just move on. On another site, you get to "rate" the bands you hear on a scale of 1 to 10; I never write a review unless its something I could honestly give an 8, 9, or 10. I'm sure it will appeal to someone, and if that someone's not me, I've got no particular reason to editorialize on it.
GeneHilbert	Date: January 2, 2007 @ 3:20 PM The deal is - not everyone will like everything by everybody, ( wow, how lyrical is that, don’t steal it…….LOL ) regardless of the quality. First and foremost write for yourself, if you like it odds are so will someone else, albeit not everyone else....... As far reviewing, read the damn thing. It may be trite, stupid, ignorant, clueless, crude, rude, cruel, mean, obscene, but maybe, just maybe something useful might be lurking beneath the bullshit.
Jazzmary2U	Date: January 2, 2007 @ 7:09 PM ya need thick skin in this business.. reminds me of when I was doing my regular gig at this swanky place.. a guy comes up to me, with little "hottie" in tow, and says he would give me twenty dollars to quit playing.. I said, "make it fifty and I'll think about it!" and kept playing. As for hip-hop.. or any other music for that matter.. find the good stuff in the genre, it's there, if you listen hard enough..
aflunky	Date: January 2, 2007 @ 8:24 PM Different Stokes for different folks, some people like Pizza, others hate it. Same with music, whether it's a single song or an entire genre. I used to get upset when people bombed on my music, but it never did me any good. I might take advice to improve myself but if they're just talking shit, I don't let it bother me cuz I didn't make the song for them, I made it for me. Next time you get someone starts shitting on your music, tell them if they don't like it, then don't buy it anymore. I surprised the hell out of a guy that bought a copy of one of my albums (Tha Snikaz LP) and next time they saw me, they told me I sucked cuz I rapped about getting drunk and doing stupid shit, as opposed to rapping about Bitches and hoes and bling. Told him sorry my style wasn't for him and if he wants I'd refund him the money and he can keep the album. He almost fell out his chair when I offered him a refund. Surprisingly he declined, and later told others to give my music a listen. Thick skin will be earned when it comes to this business...

Date: January 2, 2007 @ 11:26 PM You may as well write for yourself, because if you don't enjoy what you do, you either shouldn't be doing it or you should be making a lot of dough to do other things you do enjoy ! There are armies of songwriters and producers out there producing schmaltz for 11 year old girls for the $$$ rather than the soul and heart of making real music and they don't care that they get criticized when the record goes triple platinum and they get to spend time at their house in the Hamptons or yacht ! Most of these writers/producers often do their own thing on the side and don't care if they sell 10 copies of their album.
