naturally distorting your voice

Dizeazed	Date: May 9, 2005 @ 8:15 PM I'm quite the character, so "creating" voices isn't too hard for myself. All I usually do is reocrd my lyrics in differnt voices, then layer and pan them in my production... It's quite simple... You can peep an example in my track, "Loony Bin".
orgasmotron	Date: May 10, 2005 @ 4:54 AM ok seriously, i've sang in a few punk/ska bands in my times(all with a harder edge) so i actually do know a thing or two about distorting your voice. my advice would be, growl. growl again. remember how the first part of the growl, the "gr" sounds in the back of your throat. now if you do that while singing, you may be suprised at the results.
mdearing	Date: May 14, 2005 @ 4:40 PM I think it really is just how your throat is made. I have a natural rasp, especially when I sing high. I don't know how I do it. If I were to give any advise, it would be to just mess around with as much as possible. When your driving around singing along to your favorite CD, just practice doing different things with your throat. Or you could just chain smoke a box of Camel filterless and that should do the trick.
zedsalt	Date: May 15, 2005 @ 12:16 PM Ooh, if you're talking about rasp, DON'T get it from your throat; you'll injure yourself! Raspiness should come from the diaphragm, NOT the throat. It's difficult to explain how exactly to do it, because it's a matter of physical memory...like burping on purpose. Mdearing made a good suggestion (the trial and error one, that is, not the carton of Camels one) If you tripped across a satisfying rasp...one that tickled your tummy rather than scratched your throat...it'd then be a simple matter of committing that physical sensation to memory. Dig around in the earlier threads here; it hasn't been that long since the last time this topic came up. If I remember right, there was some good advice in the last one.

mdearing	Date: May 16, 2005 @ 4:23 PM Every singer vocal effects. Some use more than others. Korn probably does a lot of doubling of the vocals. When people hear a lot of effects on a vocal, many times what they are hearing is the doubling effect. It gives it a thicker sound.

onewhodreams	Date: May 16, 2005 @ 4:31 PM I think I said this once before but the best way to test yourself to make sure there aern't any vocal injuries or stress is this... Get a candle and put it a few inches away from your mouth (not too close ) and then sing and go for that raspy sound. If you blow the candle out, you're singing too loud.
