There are literally thousands of ways to mix
vocals. First get a really clear vocal signal.
You can run straight into the board, however I
would recommend getting a vocal pre-amp and plug
your mic into the pre-amp and then have the
signal go into the recording device. This will
give you a strong, rich signal that is warm. The
next thing is to use a p-popper to get rid of
loud clicks or pops from "s's or p's" in your
vocals. Now that you have a good strong vocal
track, it's time to add some fire to it. A 2
band eq will give you that tiny little telephone
voice, or megaphone effect. For hip hop usually
dry vocals work best. You can add a little
chorus to thicken them up if you need to but dry
is the best for that style. And then finally you
need to eq the vocals into their correct position
and or eq the music to allow the vocals to fit
where they need to. Many instruments can fight
for the same position in the eq as the voice.
Good luck.
